Mocs Open Spring at South Alabama

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team begins its spring season Monday at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate. Nine Mocs will be action with the five-man team joined by four individuals.

The nation’s 11th-ranked golfer Liam Johnston (Dumfries, Scotland) leads the five-man squad. Johnston is joined by Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.), Wes Gosselin (Knoxville), Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) and Ewan Scott (St. Andrews, Scotland). Zac Stolz (Sydney, Australia), Brooks Thomas (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Stuart Thomas (Knoxville) and Benni Weilguni (Langenlois, Austria) tee it up as individuals.

Johnston earned his ranking with a phenomenal finish to the fall campaign. He averaged 70.25 strokes per round in his three starts posting three top 10’s tying for sixth, second and ninth. Johnston was 14-under par over those 162 holes.

Gosselin is coming off his first collegiate win at the Savannah Quarters Individual last weekend. He shot one-under par 143 with a 70 and 73. He and Johnston, along with Bunn, Robb and Scott ended the fall tallying 287.29 shots per round over the squad’s final seven rounds (126 rounds).

The Mocs are one of 15 teams entered in the field. They are joined by Akron, Auburn, Davidson, Georgia State, Illinois State, Kentucky, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Ole Miss, Samford, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Texas State ad Wake Forest.

Chattanooga is paired with Ole Miss and Middle Tennessee in a 9:30 p.m., Eastern time, shotgun start. The five trios start on holes 8-11 at Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course in Mobile. The 7,158-yard course plays at a par of 71.
