The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team hits the road this weekend for the first match of the 2014 spring dual season. The Mocs travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., on Saturday, Jan. 18 to take on Middle Tennessee. Match time is set for 11:00 a.m. (E.S.T.) with live scoring available here.
Head coach Carlos Garcia has four returners from last year’s team that went 12-9 overall and finished tied for fifth in the Southern Conference with a 6-4 league mark. Couple that with a 14-9 record in 2012, and the Mocs are coming off back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2007 and 2008. Chattanooga also recorded its first winning record in league play since 2007.
UTC will have to replace five of its top six in the lineup. Junior Pavels Grigorjevs (Riga, Latvia) was 8-13 overall last season, playing most of his matches at No. 4. He was 4-5 in tournament play in the fall. Three other sophomores return, including Gino Delavalle (Rosario, Argentina), John Peacey (Emerald, Australia) and Luke Saunders (Halifax, Nova Scotia).
ETSU transfer Jorge Varon (Valencia, Venezuela) is the lone senior on the squad. He joined the Mocs in the fall and was 4-8 in tournament action. Other newcomers include freshmen Austin Boaz (Dunwoody, Ga.) and Derrick Brown (Marietta, Ga.).
Chattanooga’s first home match is Saturday, Jan. 25, against Tennessee Tech. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Hixson Racquet Club. Live scoring will be available for all home matches, and selected road events, this season. Check the men’s tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com for links and information.
