The Chattanooga Mocs men’s tennis team hits the road for two matches this weekend. The Mocs visit No. 18 Memphis on Friday and Austin Peay on Saturday in non-conference action.
Match time against the Tigers is set for 3:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) at The Racquet Club of Memphis on Friday, Jan. 31. A link for live scoring of the match against the Tigers is on the men’s tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com.
The Mocs enter the weekend with a 1-1 overall record. UTC fell to No. 50 Middle Tennessee (7-0) but scored a 4-2 win over Tennessee Tech last weekend. Chattanooga is replacing seven seniors from a 2013 squad that went 12-9 overall. The Mocs are coming off back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since the 2007 and 2008.
Senior Jorge Varon, a transfer from ETSU, is holding down the No., 1 spot for the Mocs. Junior Pavels Grigorjevs, the only top-6 player returning from last season, is penciled in at No. 2, followed by sophomore Luke Saunders. Sophomores John Peacey and Gino Delavalle and freshman Derrick Brown, round out the top-six in singles.
Memphis is 1-1 on the year after knocking off then-No. 18 South Carolina (4-2) before falling to No. 13 No. 13 Mississippi State (4-2) at the ITA Kickoff Classic in Starkville, Miss. The Tigers jumped three spots to the No. 18 ranked team in the country according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll released Wednesday. The ranking of No. 18 is the highest Memphis has ever been ranked in the ITA polls.
The Tigers are without senior David O'Hare, who is competing on Ireland's Davis Cup team this weekend. O'Hare and senior Joe Salisbury are the No. 3 ranked college doubles team in the country with a 13-5 overall. No. 49 ranked singles player, Connor Glennon, has a 6-3 singles record. No. 56 ranked Joe Salisbury, enters the weekend with an 11-7 singles mark. Senior David O'Leary is the American Athletic Conference player of the week, announced Tuesday.

First serve against the Governors is set for 2:30 p.m. (E.S.T.) on Saturday, Feb. 1. Austin Peay defeated Northern Kentucky 4-0 in last week’s season opener. The Governors are the defending Ohio Valley Conference Champions and led by three-time first-team all-conference honoree Jasmin Ademovic. Other All-OVC performers on the APSU roster include juniors Dimitar Ristovski and Aleksas Tverijonas.
