The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team opens Southern Conference action at Elon and UNC Greensboro this weekend. The Mocs are 2-5 in non-conference action and looking to improve on last year’s 6-4 SoCon record and fifth place finish in the league race.
Senior Jorge Varon leads Chattanooga in the top spot and has won two straight matches. Junior Pavels Grigorjevs, sophomores Luke Saunders, Gino Delavalle and John Peacey and freshman Derrick Brown have held down the other singles positions. Freshman Austin Boaz has been contributing in doubles play throughout the spring while Peacey and Varon have a 4-2 record at No. 1 doubles.
UTC opens with a 12:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) match against the Phoenix at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C. Elon is currently No. 40 in the nation in the latest ITA national poll with a 4-2 record. Senior Cameron Silverman is No. 26 in the country in singles and 4-3 overall.
Chattanooga is 2-13 all-time against Elon and looking to snap an 11-match slide in the series. The Phoenix swept last year’s meetings, winning 5-2 on the road March 23 and taking a 4-1 victory in the SoCon Tournament semifinals 4-1 on April 20.
Chattanooga stays on the road for Sunday’s noon match at UNCG. The Spartans have won five in a row and are 5-2 overall. Ahmet Sarioglu and James Dougherty lead the way with 4-3 singles records at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
UTC won both matches against UNCG last season, beginning with a 6-1 victory on March 16. The Mocs eaked out a 4-3 win in the SoCon Tournament on April 19. The Mocs lead the all-time series 10-8 and have won three in a row over the Spartans.
