Former Moc Chopra Finishes Third at National Open

Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis standout Ankit Chopra had an outstanding showing at the 2014 USTA National Men’s Open last week.  A 2013 graduate of UTC, Chopra finished third at the event in Newport, Rhode Island.

“I have played in big tournaments like this my whole life, so I know how tough it is to advance at these,” stated UTC men’s tennis head coach Carlos Garcia.  “For Ankit to go out and finish third in his first one is a huge accomplishment.”

Chopra was unseeded but ran off three straight win to advance to the quarterfinals.  He opened with a (6-1, 6-1) upset over No. 12 Dion Earl (Mesa, Ariz.) and followed that with a (6-2, 6-0) victory against Chris Harrison (Naperville, Ill.) in the second round.

After a third round bye, he defeated 13th seed Benn Marler (7-5, 7-5) from Tampa, Fla.  He lost to top-seeded and eventual champion Danny Riggs (Pompano Beach, Fla.) in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) in the quarters.  He then posted a consolation win over Eduardo Irizarry (Lajas, PR) to take third place (6-2, 2-0 ret.).

Chopra was a second team All-Southern Conference double player during his two-year career at UTC.  He spent last season as a student assistant coach with the Mocs, but will concentrate on his playing career in 2014-15.
