Zhukova Voted SoCon Co-Player of the Year
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Women’s tennis player Anastasia Zhukova was named 2007 Southern Conference Co-Player of the Year, the SoCon office announced Friday.

Zhukova, who also won the award last season as a junior, shares this year’s honor with Furman sophomore Laura Gioia.

The award, as well as the All-Southern Conference Teams, is voted upon by the league’s 10 coaches. Each coach is not allowed to vote for his or her own players.

A senior from Moscow, Russia, Zhukova rolled through the dual match schedule and ended the regular season with a 24-2 overall record at No. 1 singles and 17-4 at No. 1 doubles. Her only losses this year came to 47th-ranked Hala Sufi of Middle Tennessee on Feb. 20 and to Gioia on March 24. Both matches came down to three sets with the Sufi match ending at 6-3 in the third and the Gioia match resulting in a 10-8 third-set superbreaker.

Zhukova became the highest nationally-ranked female player in SoCon history prior to the 2007 dual-match season when she was listed at No. 23 in the FILA ITA Intercollegiate Tennis rankings. She is currently ranked No. 47, while Gioia broke into the rankings in the last rankings period at No. 92, and Sufi is at No. 97.

Zhukova ran her two-year UTC career record to 72-9, as the Lady Mocs finished the 2006-07 schedule Thursday with a first-round loss in the SoCon Tournament. She awaits word of a possible berth to the upcoming NCAA Championships.

Zhukova also earned First-Team All-SoCon accolades, and she and her doubles partner, junior Lindsey Ballard, were First-Team All-SoCon honorees as well. The Ballard-Zhukova tandem received the honor for the second consecutive year.

UTC men’s senior Mark Fynn was a Second-Team All-SoCon selection at the No. 2 singles position. Fynn, a Zimbabwe native who prepped at The McCallie School in Chattanooga, picks up All-SoCon singles honors for the first time in his career. Last season, the doubles duo of Fynn and Josh Bales were cited for Second-Team All-SoCon mention at No. 1 doubles.
