Men's Tennis Loses Opening SoCon Tournament Match

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The men's tennis team earned two singles victories by its two senior players but lost, 4-2 to the College of Charleston in the opening round of the 2008 Southern Conference Tennis Championships.

The senior pair tied the team score at 2-2 after winning on their respective courts.

The ninth-seeded Cougars, 8-16, led 1-0 after winning the first and third doubles matches, and held a 2-0 advantage upon Omer Abramovich's 6-4, 6-0 victory over Peter Sauska at No. 1 singles.

The eighth-seeded Mocs, 12-10, got back in the match with Badr Bouabdellah's 6-4, 6-2 win over Mickael Boyer at the second singles spot, and Razvan Axente was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Steven Myers at No. 3 singles.

Senior Pavel Vostrikov and freshman Rick van de Bovenkamp each took their opponents to a third set. Vostrikov was ahead, 6-3, 2-6, 5-0 in the third set over Joe Nicolazziwhen the match was clinched. Van de Bovenkamp did not survive his 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 matchup at No. 5 with Chris Carlton.
