The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team continues to show signs of improvement late in the season.  The Mocs scored their first Southern Conference road win of the year with a 4-3 victory at Samford today.

Chattanooga rallied from a 3-1 deficit to take the last three singles matches and the win.  UTC improves to 4-13 on the year and 2-7 in SoCon action.  The Bulldogs drop to 10-9 overall and 2-5 in league play.

Samford swept the doubles point to go up 1-0 in the match.  "That was one of the worst doubles performance I have ever seen," stated head coach Carlos Garcia

Despite the poor performance, Chattanooga may have had one of those defining moments between the doubles and singles matches.  Starting six freshmen, Garcia had been looking for someone on the team to step up and take a leadership role.

"When we broke from our huddle after the doubles point, some of the guys got the group back together.  They talked amongst themselves and decided that this was enough.  It is one thing to hear that from the coaches, but when they finally decided that the current level of play was unacceptable, the transition on the court was amazing."

Freshman William Disterdick quickly tied the score with a win at No. 5.  He defeated Michael Browder 6-0, 6-3 in less than an hour for his third straight win.  Samford took the next two matches to go up 3-1, one point away from clinching the win.

Freshman Stephen Crofford made it 3-2 win a 6-1, 6-4 over Adam Witcher at No. 6.  Freshman Roberto Vieira tied it up with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win over Carson Kadi at No. 1.  It was Vieira's third consecutive win and the fifth in his last six matches.

Freshman Jackson Tresnan closed out the match with a three-set (6-7, 7-3, 6-0) win over Carl Abalos at No. 4.  He slammed the door on the Bulldogs by winning 6-0 in the deciding set.

The Mocs are back in action this weekend when they travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for a neutral court match against Memphis.  Match time is set for 2:30 p.m. (E.D.T.) against the Tigers.  Chattanooga returns home for the final home match of the season against Tennessee-Wesleyan on April 13 at the UTC Tennis Courts.
