SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Coleman Lew & Associates, Inc., an international executive search firm, and the Southern Conference, the nation's fifth oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association, announced the selection of 25 student athletes as recipients of the sixth annual Coleman Lew Leadership Award.
Representing the Mocs are men's tennis senior Sam Parfitt (Norwich, England) and volleyball senior Ellie Kuhn (San Antonio, Texas). Recipients will be recognized at the Southern Conference Honors Dinner on Wednesday, June 1 at the Charleston Marriott in Charleston, S.C.
The award recognizes student-athletes from each of the Southern Conference's 12 member institutions. Coaches, faculty athletic representatives and senior woman administrators nominate prospective candidates based on leadership, academic excellence and athletic achievement in both the college environment and the community. Athletic directors and representatives from Coleman Lew & Associates conducted one-on-one interviews with the finalists before determining the award winners.
"Our firm is privileged to have an educational partnership with the Southern Conference," said Kenneth D. Carrick, Jr., president of Coleman Lew & Associates. "We are proud to present the sixth annual Coleman Lew Leadership Award to these outstanding student-athletes who have demonstrated leadership skills in their academic performance, athletic skill, and community service."
Parfitt is a three-year letter winner at UTC and a former Academic All-SoCon honoree. He spent much of the 2011 season rehabbing a wrist injury, but was still able to provide valuable leadership for the Mocs. Majoring in History, he carries a 3.68 grade-point-average.
Kuhn set the Chattanooga single-season block assist record with 103 as a sophomore. She has compiled 257 in her career, ranking seventh on the Lady Mocs all-time chart. She has 215 block assists, placing her in sixth on the block assists list. Another Academic All-SoCon honoree, she has a 3.17 g.p.a. as a marketing major.
"Our members should take great pride in these student-athletes, who represent their institutions so well," said Southern Conference Commissioner John Iamarino. "The Southern Conference is again grateful to Coleman Lew & Associates for their commitment to this program."
