Chattanooga Cruises Past Georgia Southern 6-1
The Mocs moved to 10-3 behind singles wins by Smith, Grigorjevs, Barroetavena (pictured), Crofford and Chopra.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga Mocs moved to 10-3 on the season, 2-1 in Southern Conference play, with a 6-1 win over visiting Georgia Southern (1-13/0-3) Thursday afternoon on the UTC Courts. Junior Manuel Barroetavena (Buenos Aires, Argentina) clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over Albert Codina Sala.

"Every win is a good win, but this one was especially special," said head coach Carlos Garcia. "To play this well without our No. 1 player (Roberto Vieira) and win so convincingly shows how well we can answer a challenge. All six guys moved up a spot and competed. I'm very proud of the way everyone stepped up today."

The Mocs received singles wins at one, two, three, five and six. Chris Smith (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Pavels Grigorjevs (Riga, Latvia) each won in straight sets at two and five. Smith won 6-0, 7-5 over Kyle Hoffman to claim the first singles point, while Grigorjevs captured a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 5 over Marco Osorio to make it 3-0.

Stephen Crofford (Franklin, Tenn.) made it 5-0 UTC with a three-set win at No. 6 over Daniel Rush. He lost the first set quickly, 6-1, but blitzed his opponent three and two almost clinching the match for Chattanooga.

The Eagles got on the board with a three-set win at four singles. Andrew Dromsky beat Jackson Tresnan (Apopka, Fla.) in a hard-fought match, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Ankit Chopra (Chandigrah, India) closed out with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 1 over Alain Garrido.

The Mocs won the doubles point in exciting fashion. After easy wins for both teams at one and three, it came down to the match at No. 2. The UTC pairing of Crofford and Sam Parfitt (Norwich, England) held a 5-3 lead over Osorio and Rush as the Eagles evened the doubles slate at a win apiece.

Osorio and Rush broke UTC to get back on serve down 5-4 with momentum swinging mightily in GSU's favor. The Mocs duo, playing their first match together this season, answered winning the next three games. That included two breaks including match point to make it 1-0 UTC heading into singles.

"Getting the doubles point against a good doubles team was important," Garcia continued. "We got the point from two teams that have never played together. Jacks (Tresnan) and Manny (Barroetavena) dominated their match. Steve-o (Crofford) and Sam (Parfitt) gutted it out when it got tough. It's just a really nice win."

Chattanooga returns to the courts on Sunday hosting Furman at 1 p.m. Live scoring is available on the men's tennis schedule page.
