"Chris has been getting better each time he has stepped on the court since we started practice," stated UTC head coach Carlos Garcia. "He has worked hard, made a few adjustments and it is nice to see his game coming together. We haven't had someone still alive on Saturday at this tournament in a long time, so this is exciting for our team."
Smith battled to three-set wins in both of his matches today. He started with a (1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5)) win over the Bears' Joao Pagan in the first round. His second round win was a (1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5)) victory over the Yellow Jackets' Garrett Gordon. Smith will take on ETSU's Rogerio Ribeiro at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
"It was a long day," added Garcia. "It was hot and humid but we still played well. We won some matches and were competitive in our losses. It was a good effort against a strong field."
