Lady Mocs Travel to Auburn for Tiger Invitational

AUBURN, Ala.-- The Chattanooga Lady Mocs softball team (1-4) travels to Auburn, Ala. this weekend to participate in the Auburn University Tigers Invitational Feb. 15-17. While at Auburn, Chattanooga will take on Kansas (4-1), Tennessee State (0-3), Indiana State (4-1) and the hosting Tigers (6-0).

The Lady Mocs were 1-4 in their first tournament of the season at Dot Richardson's National Collegiate Softball Invitational at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. UTC took a 6-4 win over the Long Island Blackbirds while falling to Virginia Tech (7-5), Southern Illinois (6-3) and Fordham twice (6-5, 2-1).

Sophomore Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.) recorded the only win on the weekend, appearing in relief to lead the Lady Mocs to their lone win over Long Island. The sophomore stands at 1-2 on the young season with a 3.32 ERA in 12.2 innings pitched. Freshmen Rachel Albritton (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), Kaisey Carson (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Jenny Garcia (Miami, Fla.) each made a start but were unable to find wins.

The Chattanooga offense is led by Sara Poteat (Thomaston, Ga.) as the senior bats .421 with eight hits. She paces the Lady Mocs with 13 total bases and has also doubled three times and tripled once.

The Lady Mocs first game of the Invitational begins Friday at 8 p.m. as they take on the Jayhawks. Kansas enters the tournament with wins over North Carolina State, Florida International and a doubleheader sweep of Georgetown. Their only loss came at the hands to the NC State when the Wolfpack avenged an 8-0 loss. State took the second game 3-2.

The Jayhawks offense is led by Alex Hugo, batting .667 with 10 hits on the season. Listed as a utility player, the freshman leads Kansas with two doubles, a triple and three homeruns. The Kansas pitching staff is paced by Alicia Pille. The sophomore is 2-0 while maintaining a 1.97 ERA in 10.2 innings pitched.

Indiana State comes into the tournament with four wins on the season, as well, claiming victories over IPFW, North Dakota and two wins over Northern Colorado. Iowa State is the only loss so far for the Sycamores.

Morgan Allee leads Indiana State with a .500 batting average and nine hits. Allee has one extra-base hit and is 6-7 in stolen base attempts. Stephanie Fougeroussee leads the Sycamores' pitching staff with a 1.98 ERA and two wins in four appearances.

The Tennessee State Tigers enter the Tiger Invitational with a 0-3 record with losses to Troy, South Alabama and Mississippi State. TSU was scheduled to play Georgia State last Sunday but was rained out.

Sophomore Kate Morris and freshman Kiarra Freeman each share a .33 batting average.

Auburn stands at 6-0 on the season with wins over Furman, Samford, ETSU, Kent State, Army and Austin Peay, going undefeated in the Plainsman Invitational at Auburn.

Morgan Estell paces the Tiger offense with a .500 batting average. The sophomore leads Auburn with 11 runs scored while also recording seven hits, a double and triple. She has walked a team-leading five times.

The Tiger pitching staff is led by Marcy Harper who maintains a 1.53 ERA while leading the team with a 3-0 record. She has started three games and completed two.
