The Mocs are currently 7-5 overall and 2-1 in Southern Conference action. Elon is leading the SoCon with a 4-0 league mark and 9-4 overall. The Phoenix defeated Dartmouth earlier in the week and has league wins over Furman (7-0), Wofford (6-1), Davidson (6-1) and The Citadel (6-1).
The Mocs are just 2-11 all time against Elon, including a current nine-match drought. UTC’s last win in the series was a 4-1 triumph in the SoCon Tournament in Charleston, S.C., on April 22, 2006.
Senior Manuel Barroetavena (Buenos Aires, Argentina) is currently 9-3 in spring action and has seen time in each of the top three singles slots. He had a straight-sets victory at No. 1 last week against UNCG. He was filling in for senior Roberto Vieira (Bedfordview, South Africa) who missed singles play with an injury.
Senior Ankit Chopra (Chandigrah, India) has won three straight singles matches. He is 6-4 in the spring and 11-8 overall.
Barroetavena also has a 7-2 record in doubles, teaming with fellow senior Jackson Tresnan (Apopka, Fla.). Tresnan is 7-4 in spring singles, playing the No. 5 or No. 6 positions.
Head coach Carlos Garcia is in his 12th season at UTC, posting a 125-142 overall record. UTC has increased its win total in each of the last three seasons. The 14-9 mark in 2012 was the best record for the program since 2007.
The Mocs also set a program record with a 3.46 team grade-point-average in the fall. All nine members of the team made the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll with a 3.0+ semester g.p.a., while seven made the Dean’s List.
