Lady Mocs Face Samford in SoCon Tournament Quarterfinals

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team opens play at the Southern Conference Tournament on Friday, April 20, against Samford.  The Lady Mocs received a first round bye after finishing the regular season with a 15-5 overall record and tied for fourth place in the SoCon race at 6-4. 

UTC will face the Bulldogs (15-5, 6-4 SoCon) for the second time in less than a week.  The Lady Mocs dropped the season finale at Samford, 5-2 on April 14.  It was the fifth-straight loss for Chattanooga in the series with Samford.  UTC has not defeated the Bulldogs since they joined the SoCon in 2009.  The last win for the Lady Mocs in the series was a 7-0 victory on April 4, 2003. 

Chattanooga is the fifth seed in the tournament after losing the tiebreaker to Samford last week.  Match time on Friday is set for 10:30 a.m. (E.D.T.) at The Citadel's Earle Tennis Center.  A link for live scoring is available on the women's tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com. 

The Lady Mocs are enjoying their best year since 1999 and their best finish in the SoCon since placing fourth in 2001.  UTC has won six of its last eight matches and are looking to make a strong postseason run.     

UTC has won three SoCon women's tennis titles, with the last coming in 1997.  The Lady Mocs have not advanced past the quarterfinals since 2004.   

Junior Jenna Nurik (Roswell, Ga.) leads the team with a career-high 23-11 singles record, including 14-6 at No. 1.  She earned All-SoCon recognition for her singles play for the third year in a row, making the first team for the second time. 

Playing No. 2, sophomore Alexa Flynn (Memphis, Tenn.) has a career-high 19-8 singles record.  She has missed nearly two weeks of action with an injury, but will be back in the lineup this weekend.   

Kaylene Chadwell (Franklin, Tenn.) has won eight straight in singles and is 22-10 overall.  She is the 2012 SoCon Freshman of the Year after posting an 8-2 mark in leauge matches. 

Seniors Emily Hangstefer (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) and Shaina Singh (Vancouver, B.C.) both have set new career marks for singles wins.  Hangstefer is 20-8 and in the No. 4 spot while Singh is 20-11 and playing No. 5.  Freshman Claire Mulyadi (Semarang, Indonesia) is 9-7 since joining the team in January.

Flynn and Chadwell (Franklin, Tenn.) are 9-4 since taking over the No. 1 doubles role.  Chadwell has an impressive 24-9 record as a doubles player this season.
