Mocs Travel to Gardner-Webb & Appalachian State
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team hits the road this weekend for a pair of matches at Gardner-Webb and Appalachian State.  The Mocs visit the Bulldogs on Friday, Feb. 1, and the Mountaineers on Sunday, Feb. 3, in Southern Conference action. 

UTC is currently in first place in the SoCon race with a 1-0 league tally.  The Mocs are 5-6 overall after snapping a four-match losing streak with a 22-20 win over The Citadel (4-5, 2-2 SoCon) on Sunday. 

Gardner-Webb is fourth in the SoCon with a 2-3 conference record, 4-7 overall.  The Mountaineers are the defending SoCon Regular Season Champs and are in second place at 3-1.  ASU is the only team in the league with a current winning record at 6-4 overall.

The Mocs are 5-6 on the year, and 1-0 in SoCon action.  The lone league win was a 22-20 victory against The Citadel on Sunday.  UTC also has wins over Ohio (21-12), Anderson (37-6), Cumberland (49-0) and Princeton (27-10).  Four of the six losses have come against ranked teams in No. 16 Virginia (9-26), No. 2 Iowa (6-37), No. 2 Oklahoma State (9-41) and No. 9 Illinois (10-29).

QUICK NOTES ON THE MOCS

  • Head Coach Heath Eslinger is 39-28 in four years with the Mocs. He is four wins away from tying his collegiate coach, Mark Leen for No. 4 on the Mocs head coaching wins list. Leen was 43-35-1 (.551) in six seasons from 1996-01.
  • The Mocs are going for their 20th straight road win in SoCon action this weekend.
  • Senior Niko Brown (197) is 9-0 in dual matches and has a team-high seven pins.
  • Senior Dean Pavlou is looking to snap a three-match losing skid at 141 pounds.

SOCON ROAD STREAK STILL INTACT
Appalachian State broke the Mocs 39-match overall winning streak with last year's 21-17 win in Maclellan Gym.  UTC still has not lost a road contest in league action since falling at The Citadel (27-13) on Feb. 14, 2004, in Charleston, S.C.  That is a streak of 19-straight wins away from Maclellan Gym in SoCon contests.

Senior Justin Guthrie is the SoCon preseason pick at 165.  There he is likely to face Mocs senior Josh Condon, the 2011 SoCon Champion at 157.

The only scheduled rematch from last year's dual is at heavyweight.  UTC sophomore Kevin Malone defeated ASU sophomore Joe Cummings 6-4 in the previous meeting.  Malone also defeated Cummings 6-2 at the Hokie Open on Nov. 4, 2012.

UTC sophomore Nick Soto had a 10-2 major decision win over Dominic Parisi on his way to winning the Hokie Open in November.

MOCS SET RECORDS IN 2012 FALL SEMESTER
The UTC wrestling team had an overall program record 2.89 grade-point-average for the 2012 fall semester.  The Mocs also set team records with 14 on the Dean's List and 18 on the AD Honor Roll.  Senior Dean Pavlou (Health & Human Performance) and freshman John Lampe (History) were two of 28 student-athletes at UTC with a 4.0 g.p.a. in the fall. 

SOTO & BROWN RANKED THIS WEEK
Sophomore Nick Soto is No. 18 according to Intermat and WIN this week.  He is listed at No. 19 in the AWN rankings.  Soto is 18-6 overall with an 8-3 mark in dual matches.  He finished second at the Wolfpack Open and won the Hokie Open earlier in the year.  Senior Niko Brown is No. 19 in this week's AWN top-20 at 197 pounds.  He is currently 21-3 overall and undefeated in dual matches at 9-0.
