Three Lady Mocs Earn All-SoCon Recognition

Three student-athletes from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team were named to the All-Southern Conference squad, the league office announced today.  Senior Jenna Nurik became UTC’s first four-time All-SoCon selection with her first-team recognition.  Freshman Kelsey Coots was a second-team pick and was joined on the SoCon All-Freshman team by Kayla Jones

"We are proud that the Southern Conference coaches have recognized the outstanding efforts of Jenna, Kelsey and Kayla,” stated head coach Jeff Clark.  “They have played some tremendous tennis this year and have contributed greatly to our success.  The Southern Conference is a highly competitive league, and for our student-athletes to be recognized among so many fine players is an honor."

This is Nurik’s third first-team All-SoCon award.  She was a second-team selection as a sophomore in 2011.  The Roswell, Ga., native has a 21-10 overall record and is 16-4 in spring action.  She played all but one of her dual matches at No. 1 and went 6-4 in the SoCon.

"Jenna Nurik has been one of the most consistent performers in the conference the past four years” added Clark.  “She has been a great example of the consummate student-athlete."

Nurik was the 2010 SoCon Freshman of the Year and has played No. 1 singles throughout her career.  She is 89-51 overall and 21-19 in four years of league matches.  Nurik is also a three-time ITA Scholar Athlete and a two-time Academic All-SoCon honoree.

Coots posted a 22-8 overall singles record.  She went 14-5 in dual matches, mostly at No. 5, and 6-4 in SoCon action.  She was also solid in doubles, going 8-0 with junior Alexa Flynn (Memphis, Tenn.) over the last month.  The Huntsville, Ala., native is 22-7 in doubles overall.

Jones leads the team with her 29-5 overall singles record.  She is 18-3 in dual matches and 7-3 in league play.  She went 15-2 in her primary spot at No. 3.  The Memphis, Tenn., native also had an 18-9 record in doubles play.

"Kayla and Kelsey have grown up tremendously since they arrived back in the fall,” said Clark.  “Their performance in singles and doubles has been outstanding."

The Lady Mocs are 17-4 overall and grabbed the No. 6 seed at the SoCon Tournament with a 6-4 league mark.  UTC opens with a first-round match against Western Carolina on Thursday, April 18, at Elon, N.C.  A link for live scoring will be available on the women’s tennis schedule page on
