Jones Wins Baras No. 1 Singles Title

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team scored wins in seven of its nine matches on the final day of the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic at the Champions Club today.  Sophomore Kayla Jones (Memphis, Tenn.) led the Lady Mocs, winning the No. 1 singles main draw and the No. 2 doubles bracket.

Jones scored her third win of the weekend in the championship match of the No. 1 draw.  She defeated Murray State’s Andrea Eskauriatza in three sets (6-1, 3-6, 6-2).

Jones and fellow sophomore Katie Polk (Woodstock, Ga.) won the No. 2 doubles main draw.  They defeated UAB’s Sarah Witowski and Catherine Ragon (8-3) in the championship match.

“I was very proud of the way Kayla played this weekend,” stated head coach Jeff Clark.  “She was the best player of the tournament and had a great start to the fall season.”

Sophomore Jovana Pecovski (Apatin, Serbia) also scored a main draw win.  She teamed with Eastern Kentucky’s Carmen Rodriguz to win the No. 3 doubles.  They defeated UT Martin’s Jessica Silva and Burcu Tari in today’s finals.

Pecovski also had a big win in the No. 5 singles fifth-place match.  There she defeated Lipscomb’s Sierra Troxel (6-3, 6-1).

Junior Claire Mulyadi (Semarang, Indonesia) finished third in the No. 3 singles bracket.  She topped Murray State’s Megan Blue (6-1, 6-0) today.  Senior Alexa Flynn (Memphis, Tenn.) had the other singles win (6-3, 6-2) over Lipscomb’s Dehan Welcher in the No. 2 fifth-place match.

Flynn and junior Kaylene Chadwell (Franklin, Tenn.) teamed for the fifth-place win in the No. 1 doubles bracket.  Mulyadi and sophomore Alison Storie (Johnson City, Tenn.) also had a fifth-place doubles win in the No. 3 draw.

“I am really pleased with our play this weekend,” added Clark.  “We did not get off to a great start on Friday, but had two really strong days on Saturday and Sunday.  This is a good way to start the year and will give us something to build on.”

The Lady Mocs are back on the courts Oct. 11-13 at the Georgia State Fall Tournament in Atlanta, Ga.  Be sure to check back to GoMocs.com for previews, recaps and results.
