Mocs Travel to Memphis to Face Tigers & Murray State

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team is taking its perfect 3-0 record on the road for a pair of matches this weekend.  The Mocs travel to Memphis, Tenn., to face the Tigers on Friday, Feb. 7, and Murray State on Saturday, Feb. 8.

Match time against Memphis is set for 8:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) on Friday at the Memphis University School’s Indoor Facility.  A link for live scoring for Friday’s match is available on the women’s tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com.  First serve against Murray State is Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Not only are the Mocs off to a 3-0 start, they have posted three straight shutouts.  This would be impressive if it wasn’t for the 8-0 record they ran off to start last season.  Not to mention, six of those wins were also shutouts.

Sophomore Kayla Jones leads the team with an 12-3 record, 3-0 at No. 1.  She is followed in the lineup by junior Kaylene Chadwell, senior Alexa Flynn, sophomore Kelsey Coots, junior Claire Mulyadi and sophomore Alison Storie.

Chadwell and Jones are 4-1 in doubles, including a 3-0 mark at No. 1.  Coots and Flynn are 3-0 at No. 2 in the spring while Mulyadi and freshman Rachele Gazzola are 2-0 at No. 3.

This is a homecoming for Jones and Flynn who are both Memphis natives.  Flynn is a 2010 graduate of Houston High School while Jones graduated from White Station in 2012.

Memphis is ranked No. 33 in the nation with a 2-2 record to start the season.  It has wins over No. 39 VCU and Iowa, with losses to No. 3 North Carolina and No. 28 Oklahoma.  The Tigers are also riding a school-record 33-match home winning streak.

Chattanooga is 7-6 all-time against Memphis.  The series dates back to 1980 with the last meeting coming in 2007.  UTC visited Memphis twice in the fall for the UTA Ohio Valley Regional and the Memphis Fall Tournament.
