In each of the last four meetings between the Chattanooga and Furman women’s tennis teams, the Paladins have squeaked out a 4-3 victory. With first place in the Southern Conference race on the line, the Mocs looked to change that trend this afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
Despite winning the doubles point, UTC could not keep the momentum going in singles action and lost again by the 4-3 score. Furman takes over first place in the SoCon with a 5-0 league mark, 12-5 overall. Chattanooga saw its nine-match winning streak snapped and falls to 4-1 in conference action, 13-3 overall.
The Mocs continued their strong doubles play, jumping out to a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Junior Kaylene Chadwell and senior Alexa Flynn opened with an 8-4 win over Alex Moreno-Kaste and Katherine Oudin at No. 1. It was their third straight win at No. 1 as they improved to 8-1 in the top spot.
UTC lost a SoCon doubles match for the first time when Blair Martin and Ansley Speaks defeated sophomores Kayla Jones and Katie Polk (8-3) at No. 2. Junior Claire Mulyadi and Kelsey Coots clinched the point with their 8-5 win over Amanda Murray and Karlee Bryde at No. 3.
The Paladins quickly tied the match when Speaks defeated Jones (6-4, 6-2) at No. 1. They took the lead after Martin scored a (7-6 (4), 6-1) win over Polk at No. 6.
Chattanooga tied it back up at 2-2 after Coots defeated Byrde (7-6 (5), 7-5) at No. 4. She improved to 10-3 at No. 4 with the win.
Furman want back on top when Kelly Sullivan took out Mulyadi (7-5, 6-2) at No. 5. That win snapped Mulyadi’s personal nine-match winning streak in singles action. It also left the two, three-setters that were still on the court as the deciding matches.
Chadwell won her first set against Moreno-Kaste in a (7-3) tiebreaker, but quickly lost the second 6-2. She regained her composure to score a 6-1 win in the third. She remains undefeated in SoCon singles at 5-0 and is 13-2 at No. 2 this spring.
That left Flynn’s No. 3 match against Oudin as the decider. Flynn won the first set 6-4 and had a tiebreaker for the point in the second set. She lost that breaker 8-6 and dropped the third set 6-4.
Chattanooga is now a ½-game behind Samford (13-2, 5-1) for second place in the conference race. The Mocs next match is Wednesday at Western Carolina. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m. in Cullowhee, N.C.
