The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team hosts a pair of crucial Southern Conference matches this weekend. The second place Mocs welcome fourth place Elon and UNCG to the UTC Tennis Courts on Saturday and Sunday.
Chattanooga is 14-3 overall and tied with Samford for second in the league race at 5-1. Furman leads the way with a 6-0 conference ledger. Elon and UNCG are both 4-1 in SoCon action and tied for fourth. Click here for a full rundown of the SoCon standings heading into the weekend.
Teams are all battling for the SoCon regular season trophy as well as positioning at the SoCon Tournament in less than two weeks. UTC is the host for the event on April 16-19 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga.
The Mocs are two wins away from their most in SoCon action since going 7-2 in 2000. UTC could also capture its highest seed at the tournament since a No. 2 position in 2002.
Junior Kaylene Chadwell is 14-2 at No. 2 this spring and undefeated in league play at 6-0. As a team, the Mocs are 31-5 (.861) in SoCon singles. Chadwell and senior Alexa Flynn lead the way in doubles with a 9-1 mark at No. 1. They are also 6-0 in the league.
Saturday’s match against the Spartans is set for Noon on the UTC Tennis Courts. UNCG is 7-9 overall and has won the last eight matches against the Mocs. UTC is 7-10 in the all-time series, but its last win was a 4-3 victory on March 26, 2006 in Greensboro, N.C.
Kayla Gammie leads the way for the Spartans. She is 5-0 in SoCon action in the middle of the lineup.
UTC welcomes Elon on Sunday at Noon at the UTC Tennis Courts. The Phoenix is 10-6 overall and travels to Samford on Saturday before visiting the Mocs.
UTC is 4-9 all-time against Elon, but has won each of the last three meetings. Last year’s 4-3 win came against a Phoenix squad that was ranked No. 59 in the nation and lost only four matches the entire year.
Frida Jansaker leads the team with a 10-4 singles record in the spring. She is also 5-0 in SoCon action. Elon is 25-5 in singles and 11-4 in doubles in conference play this spring.
