CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The Chattanooga senior duo of Lindsey Ballard and Bonnie Adams went out winners Thursday as each won their respective singles matches in the opening round of the 2008 Southern Conference Tennis Championships.

It wasn't enough, however, as ninth-seeded Appalachian State eliminted the eighth-seeded Lady Mocs, 4-2 at the Earle Tennis Center on the campus of The Citadel.

The Mountaineers won the doubles point by claiming two tight doubles matches at the second and third positions.

Ballard tied the team score at 1-1 with the first singles win of the day, a 6-1, 7-5 decision over Anja Gugger at the top spot.

After two ASU wins at No. 2 and No. 6, Adams trimmed the deficit to 3-2 by defeating Heather Prior at No. 3, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1.

Amanda Cash clinched the Mountaineers' win at the fourth spot, edging junior Beata Knizat in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Freshman Annie Green was tied 6-3, 4-6, 6-6 in the third set of her match at No. 5 with Elizabeth Holland when the match was clinched with the fourth team point.

Chattanooga finishes the season with an 8-12 record.
