Nurik Named SoCon Freshman of the Year
Jenna Nurik was named the SoCon Freshman of the Year today.

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis student-athlete Jenna Nurik (Roswell, Ga.) was named Freshman of the Year by the Southern Conference today.  Nurik played the No. 1 singles spot for the Lady Mocs throughout the season, posting a 21-9 overall record.

Nurik start her collegiate career with a strong 7-1 mark in tournament action during the fall.  She continued that in the spring with a 14-8 record in dual matches.  She went 5-5 in the SoCon and had a six-match winning streak at one point during the spring.

With a 19-11 overall record, Nurik was nearly as impressive in doubles action.  She was 8-1 in the fall with sophomore teammate Emily Hangstefer, but played the last two months of the spring with sophomore Shaina Singh.  The duo posted a 9-5 overall tally and 5-4 in SoCon matches.  They were 6-3 in the No. 2 position.

In addition to being named Freshman of the Year, Nurik also earned first team All-SoCon honors and was a member of the SoCon All-Freshman squad.  Nurik is the first Lady Moc to earn SoCon Freshman of the Year since Cynthia Oulevay took home the honors in 2001.  Nurik is also the first UTC women's tennis player to earn first-team All-SoCon recognition since Anastasia Zhukova in 2007.

"I am proud of Jenna for her Southern Conference honors" stated head coach Jeff Clark.  "Through hard work and a commitment to her teammates, she improved as a singles and doubles player throughout the season.  Most importantly, Jenna exhibited great sportsmanship and represented her university, her team, and her family in a first-class manner."

Chattanooga finished the season with a 9-13 overall record.  The Lady Mocs were eighth in the SoCon with a 3-7 league mark.  It was the most conference wins in a season for UTC since going 6-4 in 2004.  The Lady Mocs lose just one senior, Beata Knizat, who saw significant action in 2009-10 and return the rest of their lineup for next season.

Nurik is a native of Roswell, Ga., and was on the Dean's List during the 2009 fall semester.  She was also one of 24 Mocs to post a 4.0 grade-point-average last semester.  Although currently undecided, she plans to major in Business.
