The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team takes on Samford in the second round of the 2011 Southern Conference Tournament this week. UTC is hosting the event at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, April 20-23, and the Lady Mocs are the No. 5 seed.
Match time against the fourth-seeded Bulldogs is set for Thursday, April 21, at 8:30 a.m. (E.D.T.). Both teams earned a first-round bye with their top-5 finish in the SoCon regular season standings. Live scoring for the match will be available on GoMocs.com.
With an 11-10 overall record, the Lady Mocs are one win away from securing their first winning season since 2003. Their 6-4 SoCon record was their most wins in league action since posting that same result in 2004.
Samford finished fourth in the SoCon with a 7-3 league mark. The Bulldogs were an impressive 17-4 overall, including a 6-1 win at Chattanooga on April 13.
Sophomore Jenna Nurik (Roswell, Ga.), the 2010 SoCon Freshman of the Year, is 12-9 in spring action at the top spot. She is also one of five Lady Mocs in double-figures with a 17-14 overall singles record. Freshman Alexa Flynn (Memphis, Tenn.) leads the team, going 18-11 singles.
Junior Shaina Singh (Vancouver, B.C.) is the third Lady Moc with 10 wins. She has won seven of her last 10 and is now 17-14. She finished with a 7-3 record in SoCon action at No. 4.
Junior Emily Hangstefer (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) is 6-9 at No. 3 while fellow junior Charlotte Bossy (Koekelare, Belgium) is 8-7 at No. 5. Freshman Diana Zora (Barrancabermeja, Colombia) has been in the lineup the last month and is 5-7 in dual matches.
Nurik and Singh make up UTC's top doubles team. They have won seven of their last 10 matches and are 14-6 in the spring, 19-8 overall. The duo also finished with a 7-3 mark in SoCon play.
The SoCon Tournament returns to Chattanooga for the first time since 2000. The last time the Lady Mocs hosted the event, they advanced all of the way to the finals, coming up one match short of the NCAA Tournament.
The Lady Mocs have won five SoCon Tournament Titles in school history, second only to Furman's 16. The last time Chattanooga took home the trophy was 1990 in Asheville, N.C.
UTC women's tennis has a storied history that includes six national titles and 14 All-Americans. Chattanooga won the AIAW Small College National Championship in 1977, 1978 and 1979. The Lady Mocs also won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1983, 1984 and 1985.
