Volleyball Falls 3-1 to Furman Saturday Evening

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.-The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team (10-16, 4-7 SoCon) fell 3-1 to Furman (20-7, 8-4 SoCon) Saturday evening in Greenville, S.C.

Freshman Sarah Batterton (Colbert, Wash.) was the Mocs' offensive leader with 13 kills, and freshman Briana Reid (Houston, Texas), senior Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) and freshman Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) diving the digs. Passmore led on defense with 30 digs, her fifth 30-plus dig performance of the season, while Chason had 18 and Reid had 14. Batterton and freshman Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) each collected three digs.

Chattanooga claimed the first set of the match 25-21, hitting a match-high .256. Five kills from Batterton and seven errors by the Furman offense helped lead to the 1-0 lead for UTC, but the Paladins battled back to down the Mocs by a nine-point margin in the second frame.

Furman hit .244 in the second set, but eight errors and just eight kills, leading to a .000 hitting percentage, hurt the Mocs most. Furman jumped out to a 12-4 lead quickly, piecing together four multi-point runs toward mid-match. The Paladins were able to finish off the Mocs with a 4-1 run to tie the match 1-1 going to the intermission.

Furman took the third stanza 25-19, just inching out the Mocs to the 25 mark. A five-point run gave the Paladins their second set over the Mocs, running away from a 20-19 situation late. Furman's Ellie Ross gave Furman the set with a service ace.

The fourth and final set of the match was decided by just two points, but the Paladins took the set by a nose to claim the match. Down 23-22 late in the set, Furman down three-straight kills to send the Mocs back to Chattanooga with their seventh conference loss.

Chattanooga travels to Birmingham, Ala., Tuesday afternoon for a 6 p.m. matchup with Samford before returning home for its final homestand Nov. 2-3.
