CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s and women’s cross country teams will travel to Louisville, Ky., for the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic Saturday morning at the E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park, home of the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championships. The event is hosted by the Louisville Sports Commission and will feature Division I teams from various regions.
The Mocs will participate in the Gold Division that starts off at 9:30 a.m. The event will feature 33 teams including Southern Conference foes Davidson, Elon and Samford.
“We’ll get a good look at what we can expect for the Southern Conference race,” UTC Head Coach Bill Gautier said. “We will be going up against several teams from our conference as well as teams from the South Region.”
Seniors Lucas Cotter (Collierville, Tenn.) and Mark Cole (McKenzie, Tenn.) will lead the Mocs on the course with Paul Stuart (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Trevor Janssen (Jordan Station, Ontario) along with John Gilpin (Nashville, Tenn.) providing depth to a team that finished sixth in the NCAA region last fall.
Also featured in the men’s Gold race will be Louisville, Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Tennessee, Kentucky as well as Georgia Tech and Texas A&M.
The women will compete in the Blue Division set to start at 11:30 a.m., but without top runners Teghan Henderson (Pickering, Ontario) and Amanda Sumner (Bristol, Conn.) who are out with injuries. Rebecca Greenwall (Bogart, Ga.) and Keeley Stewart (Winchester, Tenn.) will lead a young squad rounded out by freshmen Jessica York (Normandy, Tenn.), Katie Ray (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Anna Kate Chance (Columbia, Tenn.).
“This is a young team,” Gautier said. “We’ll be without our top runners, but they’re excited and ready to run.”
