Lady Mocs Fall 6-1 to Phoenix; Mocs Get Swept 7-0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga women’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Elon Saturday afternoon in its Southern Conference opener at the UTC Tennis Courts.


The Lady Mocs fall to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in league play while the Phoenix improve to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in conference action.


Chattanooga’s lone point came in Charlotte Bossy’s first singles match since returning to action following an injury. Bossy won the first set over Melissa Wolf 6-2. However, Wolf would even the match out with a 6-3 decision in the second set. Bossy bounced back and claimed the match with a 6-3 win in the final set. Bossy improves to 2-3 on the year.


Elon claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 position, but Chattanooga’s Bossy and Jennemieke van der Veek won the No. 2 match 8-7(3) over Elisa Simonetti and Daleen Kloppers. Anna Milian and Paige Kensrue defeated Shaina Singh and Emily Hangstefer 8-5 at the top spot while Sally Wilkey and Wolf defeated Annie Green and Grace Robinette 8-1 at No. 3.


In singles Milian defeated Singh 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 position and van der Veek fell 6-2, 6-2 to Kensrue at the No. 2 spot. Elon’s Simonetti claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Hangstefer at No. 3, Whitney Butcher defeated Green 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 and Kloppers posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 over UTC’s Brianna Wishing.


Bossy made her return to the lineup last weekend at UAB, but the match was cancelled due to the weather conditions during doubles play. Robinette, who was pulled from play during the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic, made her return to the lineup today playing doubles.


The Lady Mocs will travel to Charleston to take on the College of Charleston Cougars Monday at 1 p.m.


In men’s play, the Elon Phoenix swept the Mocs 7-0. Elon swept the doubles point claiming the top two matches by identical 8-6 scores and an 8-2 win at No. 3.


In a marathon at the #1 singles position, Chattanooga’s Peter Sauska battled No. 56 Damon Gooch in a match that lasted two hours and 28 minutes. Gooch came up with a 7-5, 6-4 win. Sauska was down 4-1 in the second set and mounted a comeback winning three of the next four games to get to within a game at 5-4.


At #4 Rick van de Bovenkamp won the first set 7-5 over Philip Nemic then dropped the second in a 6-2 decision. With the match already decided, the two fought it out in a super tiebreak that saw Nemic victorious 10-8.


At the second spot, Pavel Vostrikov fell 6-4, 6-1 to Elon’s Oscar Podlewski and Alberto Rojas posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 over UTC’s Gordon Rudell. Chase Helpingstine defeated the Mocs’ Dakota Pate 6-2, 6-5 and Elon clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-1 win by Carlin Murray over Alex Butnarcuic at #3.


Chattanoga falls to 1-8 overall and 0-2 in league play while the Phoenix improve to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in conference action. 


The Mocs will host UNC Greensboro at Noon on Sunday at the UTC Tennis Courts. This match time is changed in an effort to get ahead of the predicted rain.
