CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team announced its 2013 schedule Monday. Along with 16 Southern Conference matchups and three road tournaments, Maclellan Gym is set to host the County Inns & Suites Invitational for a ninth consecutive season. Among their 25 opponents, the Mocs take on three NCAA Tournament participants - Belmont, College of Charleston and Tennessee.
The Mocs are coming off their first Southern Conference Tournament appearance in four season while posting a fifth-best win improvement mark among 330 NCAA Division I volleyball programs.
“We are really excited about this season’s schedule,” Head Coach Travis Filar said. “The Mocs are going to be a part of a lot of challenging tournaments and are going to get to compete at a very high level. We begin the season by playing in one of the best volleyball atmospheres in the country with the Georgia Tech tournament at O’Keefe Gym.”
Filar and the Mocs begin the season Friday, August 30 as they travel to Atlanta, Ga., to compete in the Georgia Tech Invitational. The College of Charleston, Georgia Tech and Florida A&M await Chattanooga to tee off the slate before UTC hosts the 2013 County Inns & Suites Invitational.
“We have five teams in this year’s home tournament, as opposed to four, and it’s going to bring some intense volleyball to Maclellan Gym,” Filar said. “We are excited that Tennessee, a strong team that competed in the NCAA Tournament last season, has agreed to be a part of the action at Maclellan Gym along with the other team on schedule.”
The five-team tournament begins Thursday, September 5 as Chattanooga takes on the Lady Vols for a 7 p.m. marquee matchup. The Scenic City hosts Charlotte, Asheville and UT-Martin for the weekend as the tournament wraps up Saturday, September 7, with UTC facing off against the Asheville Bulldogs. It will be the first time all three schools from the Tennessee system compete in the tournament.
Florida International hosts the Mocs for the FIU Invitational September 13-15 in Miami, Fla., as Chattanooga goes head-to-head against the Panthers, Jacksonville and South Dakota State. UTC wraps up its pre-conference tournament schedule September 20-21 with three games in Oxford, Miss., as part of the Rebel Classic at Ole Miss. While in Oxford, Chattanooga matches up with Southern Mississippi, Louisiana-Lafayette and the hosting Rebels.
The Mocs open their Southern Conference slate Friday, Sept. 27 in Greenville, S.C., against Furman and conclude the opening weekend with the Wofford Terriers in Spartanburg, S.C. Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
Chattanooga opens its home SoCon schedule Oct. 4 at Maclellan Gym as the Mocs play host to Appalachian State at 6 p.m. Western Carolina visits the Scenic City the following day for a 3 p.m. match.
UTC wraps up the season at home with a 6 p.m. match against the Paladins Nov. 16, its second 2013 meeting with Furman, before traveling to Greenville, S.C., to compete in the Southern Conference Tournament Nov. 23-25 at Furman.
