Mocs Volleyball Opens Season at Georgia Tech

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga volleyball team begins its season Friday as the Mocs travel to Atlanta, Ga., for the Georgia Tech Invitational. With three matches on tap, Head Coach Travis Filar and Chattanooga also meets up with a familiar foe and an ACC powerhouse.

“We are excited to get the season under way,” Filar said. “Georgia Tech is a great program with a great volleyball atmosphere. Playing at O’Keefe Gymnasium will be fun and exciting for our team.”

The Mocs get started at Noon with a meeting against former Southern Conference member College of Charleston. The mid-day-matchup will mark the 35th meeting between the two programs with the Cougars dominating the series 9-26. The last match between UTC and CofC ended in a 3-0 loss for the Mocs in Charleston, S.C. The Cougars went on to claim the SoCon Tournament title and advance to the NCAA Regionals.

After reuniting with Charleston, the Mocs go head-to-head with the hosting Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at 7 p.m. Georgia Tech was 19-12 last season and was a perfect 3-0 in the same tournament to kick off the season. Chattanooga looks to derail the Yellow Jackets and improve on its 3-8 series record against Tech. The last meeting between the Jackets and Mocs was in 2002 under Lisa Rhodes. Chattanooga fell 3-0 at O’Keefe Gymnasium.

Chattanooga wraps up the opening weekend with a 10:30 a.m. Sunday matchup with Florida A&M. After having Saturday to rest, the Mocs and Rattlers meet for the first time in program history. FAMU finished 15-11 in 2012 with a 10-0 record in the MEAC and is picked to finish first in the MEAC Southern Division in the 2013 preseason poll.

“We’re facing a group of great teams this weekend and I feel good about this team,” Filar said. “We’re talented and I am excited to see how we perform on the court.”

The Mocs are picked to finish fifth in the Southern Conference by the league’s coaches and enter the 2013 season with the fifth-best win improvement mark from the 2011-12 seasons. Chattanooga also debuts its top 100 recruiting class with the opening of the season.
