CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team hits the road this weekend for a three-day trip to Miami, Fla., for the Florida International Invitational. UTC is scheduled to play two matches Friday, an off day Saturday and a match on Sunday before heading back to the Scenic City.
UTC searches for its first win in Miami as the Mocs sit at 0-8 on the year. Chattanooga looks to freshman Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) to lead the way. The freshman leads Chattanooga with 74 kills and averages 2.55 kils per set. Sophomore Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) is responsilbe to setting up the kills with 126 assists on the season and sophomore libero Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) leads the defense with 115 digs.
The Mocs are in action at Noon Friday as Chattanooga takes on the hosting Panthers. Florida International is 3-3 on the season and 2-1 when at home. The FUI Invitational marks the second weekend in a row the Panthers have hosted a tournament, last week hosting the FIU Classic.
Redshirt junior Ksenia Sukhareva leads the Panters offense with 80 kills, averaging 3.64 kills per set and has recorded 10 blocks on the season. Six-foot-three senior Kimberly Smith ranks second on the team in kills and blocks with 54 and 17, respectively. Senior CeCe Spencer is FIU’s defensive leader at the net with 19 blocks, averaging 1.12 blocks per set.
Chattanooga takes on Jacksonville in its second Friday match at 5 p.m. as the Dolphins look to claim their third tournament title of the season. A perfect 6-0 mark thus far, Jacksonville has taken the top spot in Florida Atlantic University’s Invitational and its own Hilton Garden Inn Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla.
Sophomore Sammie Strausbaugh is the Dolphins offensive leader with 80 kills, averaging over three kills per set, and totaling a .377 hitting percentage. Atlantic Sun Player of the Week senior Kendall Courtney totals 229 assists on the season and averages 10.41 assists per set while senior Kylie Jacob has already collected 28 blocks.
With an off day on Saturday, Chattanooga has a little down time and a chance to prepare for Sunday’s 10 a.m. opponent South Dakota State. The Jackrabbits are struggling at 1-5 this season with their lone win coming over Drake in their last match.
The Jackrabbits offense is paced by Wagner Larson as the sophomore has 59 kills on the season and leads the team with a .243 among hitters with more than 20 kills. The defense is headed up by both redshirt freshman Kacey Herrmann and sophomore Lizzie Palmer with 77 digs each, and freshman Tiara Gibson and Larson have each blocked 11 attempted kills.

The Mocs return to Maclallan Gym Sept. 17 as Chattanooga hosts the UAB Blazers at 7 p.m. UTC travels to Oxford, Miss., for the Red and Blue Classic at Ole Miss the following weekend before entering Southern Conference play against Furman.
