CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team returns to Maclellan Gym Tuesday night at UTC hosts UAB for a 7 p.m. match. Chattanooga goes for the win against the 7-2 Conference USA Blazers.
Chattanooga looks to break out of an 0-3 all-time record against UAB. The last time these two teams met up was 1997 when the Blazers took 3-1 win over the Mocs in Birmingham, Ala.
UTC enters the match in search of its first win of the season as the Mocs are coming off an 0-3 weekend in Miami, Fla., at the FIU Invitational. Chattanooga suffered 3-0 losses to Jacksonville, Florida International and South Dakota State.
Freshman Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) continues to lead the Mocs with 100 kills on the season and 2.70 kills per set while freshman Anne Bachmann (Lincoln, Neb.) has garnered 169 assists from the setter’s position, splitting time with sophomore Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) who has 131 assists.
The Mocs defense is steered by defensive specialists Melissa Green (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) who have collected 99 and 149 digs, respectively. Junior Kasey Talley (Boiling Springs, S.C.) leads the Mocs at the net with 27 blocks while freshman Kendall Sexton (Orlando, Fla.) ranks second with 23 blocks.
The Blazers come into the matchup with a 1-0 record on the road and coming off a 2-1 weekend at the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind. While in Indiana, UAB knocked off Tennessee State and Wyoming while its only loss came against the hosting Hoosiers. The Blazers are 3-0 against Southern Conference teams this season, topping Samford in the fifth game of the season 3-0.
UAB outside hitter Sam Skinner leads the team with 116 kills and is averaging 4.0 kills per set. The 5-foot-10 sophomore has also collected 20 blocks and is averaging 2.14 digs per set. Skinner was named to the All-CUSA Preseason Team and was named to the UAB/Samford Volleyball Challenge All-Tournament Team.
