CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – With momentum propelling the Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team into the weekend, UTC travels to Davidson, N.C., to take on the Wildcats Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Mocs are coming off a 3-0 sweep of Samford Wednesday night at Maclellan Gym, improving their record in the Southern Conference to 2-3. Davidson enters the weekend 11-7 with a 2-2 SoCon record. The Wildcats meet Samford Friday night at 6 p.m., before entertaining Chattanooga.
Freshman Allie Davenport (Orlando, Fla.) continues to lead her squad, while sophomore Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) is coming off a 12-kill performance against the Bulldogs. Davenport finished second on Wednesday night with eight kills. She ranks 16th in the nation with an average of .48 aces per set.
Head Coach Travis Filar was pleased with his offense Wednesday, while also seeing a step up in the Mocs setting and passing game.
“I thought Melissa Green (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) made great passes and came up with some great digs for us,” Filar said. “Catherine and Anne Bachmann (Lincoln, Neb.) were also instrumental in setting up great attacks for our hitters.”
Chason led the Mocs with 19 assists, while she and Green both recorded 14 digs. Bachmann totaled 12 assists splitting time at setter with Chason.
The defense is paced by Kendall Sexton (Orlando, Fla.). The freshman leads with 55 blocks on the season. Sexton collected two blocks against Samford, while sophomore Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) commands 38 blocks on the season and totaled eight against the Bulldogs.
On the season, the Mocs have committed 27 fewer errors than its opponent and is averaging 10.3 kills per set. The defense posts 15.9 digs per set, ranking 59th in the nation.
Opposite of the Mocs, Davidson is led by senior Carolina Brown. The El Paso, Texas native paces the Wildcat offense with 230 kills, averaging 3.19 kills and 3.78 points per set. Her 272.0 total points is a team best as well.
Davidson’s defense is driven by junior Anastasia Owen. The defensive specialist tallies 4.18 digs per set and has collected a team-best 301 digs thus far. Middle hitter Emily Franklin leads the ‘Cats blocking with 70.0 on the season. The freshman averages 0.97 blocks per set, while fellow freshman Mikayla Derochie continues to set up the Davidson offense.
Derochie has been crowned the SoCon Freshman of the Week four times on the season with her last honor coming just last week. The freshman has a team-high 718 assists, 9.97 per set.
In the NCAA ranks, Caroline Brown is 58th in the nation averaging .39 aces per set, while the Wildcats are 57th in the rankings with 15.81 digs per set.
