CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team hosts UNCG and Elon Friday and Saturday at Maclellan Gym with both matches beginning at 6 p.m.
The Mocs are in search of their first SoCon win since pulling a 3-0 upset over Samford at Maclellan Gym last Wednesday night. Since then, UTC has fallen to Davidson in North Carolina. Chattanooga is 3-18 while maintaining a 2-4 record in the SoCon.
Freshman Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) continues to lead the Southern Conference with .46 aces per set, ranking her 20th in the nation in the category. Libero Melissa Green (Boca Raton, Fla.) ranks in the SoCon top 10 in digs with 3.79 per set.
The weekend series begins as the Spartans visit the Scenic City Friday. UNCG is 10-9 on the season with a 3-3 record in the Southern Conference. It will be the first meeting of the season between the two teams. All time, Chattanooga leads the series 25-8 with UTC claiming the last match 3-2 at Maclellan Gym.
The Spartans have a pair of players about to reach the 1,000 kill plateau for their careers. Senior outside hitter Karrian Chambers needs just four kills to obtain the mark while senior middle hitter Olivia Humphries needs just 24.
Elon comes to town Saturday night for a second 6 p.m. start. The Mocs control that series, as well, leading the Phoenix 12-9 all time. Chattanooga scored a 3-2 victory in its last meeting with Elon, taking the match at home. Last season’s back-to-back wins over UNCG and Elon sparked a four-match winning streak for UTC.
The Phoenix is 12-10 on the season and 3-3 in league play. Even at 5-5 overall and 2-2 in league play on the road, Elon is outscoring opponents 45-38 on the season in sets. Junior ranks among the SoCon top 10 with 25 aces on the season, 10 behind league-leading Davenport.
