CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team packs for the road one last time this season as Boone and Cullowhee, N.C., await UTC’s visit to Appalachian State and Western Carolina. The Mocs are in the mountains Saturday for a 7 p.m. match with the Mountaineers and the Catamounts are scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday.
Chattanooga looks to even the season series with both teams this weekend, suffering back-to-back losses at home in early October to App. State and Western. The Mountaineers downed UTC 3-1 and the Catamounts bested the Mocs 3-0 in Maclellan Gym.
Meghan Mahoney, the Week 10 Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week and the Mountaineers are coming off a 2-0 weekend over Elon and UNCG. Garnering her fourth defensive honor of the season, the libero recorded 47 digs in six sets to help the Mountaineers to a 7-5 SoCon record. Overall, App. is 16-10 and entertains a five-match win.
Along with the win earlier in the season, the Mountaineers hold a 37-24 advantage over UTC as the Mocs took two matches from App. in 2012. In the last Boone meeting, Chattanooga topped ASU 3-1.
Western Carolina sits in the middle of the SoCon pack with a 6-6 conference record and 16-10 overall mark. Currently, the Catamounts are suffering a three-match losing streak with defeats to ASU, UNCG and Elon. Before meeting with Chattanooga, WCU also faces Samford Friday at 6 p.m.
Despite their current streak, libero Morgan Cochran currentl leads the NCAA in digs per set with 6.18. Another highlight on defense for the Catamounts is middle blocker Addy George as she leads the SoCon in blocks per set and ranks 37th in the nation with 1.29.
The all-time series between the two teams is tied 34-34 going into the weekend. The Mocs and Catamounts split last season’s series 1-1. UTC fell 3-0 at Maclellan while WCU dropped a 3-0 bid in Cullowhee.
