CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team is set to host a Blue & Gold scrimmage Saturday at 3 p.m. on its home court at Maclellan Gym. This event is open to the public, admission is free and offers UTC fans their first look at the 2014 squad.
Split into two teams, the intersquad match pins the Mocs’ 16 student-athletes against one another to simulate in-game action for the first time since the season’s new-look roster was formed just last week upon arrival to campus. Lead by seniors Melissa Green (Boca Raton, Fla.) Brianna Guzinski (Jacksonville, Fla.), Chattanooga’s 11 returning letterwinners and five newcomers go head-to-head in a fast-pace battle for bragging rights.
Saturday is the first chance for fans to get a look at Butler transfer and Scenic City native Nicole Sumida (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Nebraska-Omaha transfer Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.). It is also the first time freshmen Lauren Greenspoon (Houston, Texas), Eden Murray (Dacula, Ga.) and Maddie Marshall (Springfield, Mo.) will compete at the collegiate level with the Mocs.
“It will be a lot of fun for both the team and our fans,” Head Coach Travis Filar said. “It’s the first time one unit will get to compete against another unit while facing in-match situations, and it’s a great chance for the fans to come out and watch the team for the first time before we get the season started.”
The Mocs will also host an autograph session open free to fans on the court following the event.
Chattanooga’s season begins Aug. 29 in Houston, Texas at the Houston Marriott Westchase Classic. Its first home match is set for Sept. 2 as the Mocs host Kennesaw State at Maclellan Gym.
