CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team hosted its Blue & Gold match Saturday at Maclellan Gym, pinning the team head-to-head against one another to signal the end of preseason prep for the squad.
“This scrimmage is what really caps off the preseason for us,” Head Coach Travis Filar said. “We begin our season practice this week and get ready for the first match of the year. The team begins classes on Monday and we begin counting down the days until we’re in Houston to open.”
In front of an enthusiastic home crowd on Saturday afternoon, the split-squad Mocs battled it out for not only bragging rights amongst each other but also to helped solidify starting roles and positions going into the 2014 campaign.
“This was a great chance for us, as coaches, to see the team one last time in a game-like environment before starting the season,” Filar said. “We saw a lot of girls really step up and prove themselves as starters. That isn’t set in stone, but we saw a lot of fighting for position. This scrimmage will have a lot of influence on who sees the court in the opening weeks. Not every spot is guaranteed for returners, and don’t be surprised if some newcomers see a lot of action on the floor.”
After the scrimmage, the team signed autographs and handed out free schedule cards and posters to promote the upcoming season.
“We had such a great turnout and hope it continues on into our home matches,” Filar said. “I think today gave our fans a good glimpse into what is to come. I think today really showed how much we’ve grown as a team and how much we’ve improved.”
Chattanooga’s hits the hardwood Aug. 29 in Houston, Texas at the Houston Marriott Westchase Classic. Its first home match is set for Sept. 2 as the Mocs host Kennesaw State at Maclellan Gym.
