CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team opens it home schedule Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Maclellan Gym against Kennesaw State. Tuesday’s match is being promoted as the volleyball team’s first “Mocs Fly Together” event, and they are encouraging everyone from fellow student-athletes, to faculty to students to attend the year’s only mid-week match.
“It is our only Tuesday match of the season and we want it to be big,” Head Coach Travis Filar said. “We want to pack Maclellan Gym and give the team a strong home-team advantage.”
Admission is free and tons of Mocs prizes are available to win. Free mini volleyballs will be thrown out during starting lineups, as well as service ace t-shirts after every Chattanooga ace, and blue & gold poms are available to fans at the doors.
The visiting Owls are 2-1 on the season with wins over Belmont and Evansville while UTC comes into the matchup with a 3-0 win over Houston Baptist under its belt.
Junior Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) led the Mocs offensively over the weekend with 31 kills, and junior Catherine Chason (Alpharetta, Ga.) was the defensive leader with 52 digs at the libero position. Fellow junior Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) totaled 13 blocks over the three matches and is currently eighth in the Southern Conference standings in the category.
Kennesaw State is led by outside hitter Kelly Marcinek. The sophomore collected 33 blocks at the Belmont Invitational in Nashville, Tenn., and is averaging 3.00 kills per set. Defensively, the Owls look to Katarina Morton to dig attacks, averaging 4.55 digs per set, and middle blocker Megan McGuinness stands tall at the net with nine blocks in three matches.
After Tuesday’s match, the Mocs head to Athens, Ga., for the Georgia Bulldog Invitational Friday and Saturday. UTC does not return home until Sept. 12 as Chattanooga hosts the Chattanooga Classic.
