BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- In a battle between the first and second place teams of the Southern Conference’s North Division, the Samford Bulldogs bested the Lady Mocs 3-0 Wednesday night in Birmingham.
The Lady Mocs (13-13, 8-4 Southern) were held to a .049 hitting percentage by the stingy Samford defense as the Bulldogs (22-3, 11-1 Southern) took the match 25-12, 25-15, and 25-19.
Courtney Barnes and Jessica Scott both led Chattanooga on the night with five kills apiece as Michaela Huff had a team-high 11 assists. Aurore Kullak and Bailee Chastain also contributed with four kills each in the loss.
Lara Newberry paced the Lady Mocs’ defense with a match-high 15 digs, while the team combined for four team blocks on the evening.
The Bulldogs were led on offense by Ashley Adams with a match-high 12 kills and setter Hillary Fountain with 36 assists as Samford hit .349 on the match. Samantha Bland also recorded three services aces as the Bulldogs had 10 in the night.
Next up for the Lady Mocs will be Davidson and Georgia Southern in the team’s final two home games of the season. Chattanooga will play Davidson on Saturday and Georgia Southern on Sunday, with both matches beginning a 2 p.m.
During Saturday’s match against Davidson, both teams will participate in Komen’s Dig for the Cure for Breast Cancer and Sunday’s match against Georgia Southern will be Senior Day, commemorating the Lady Mocs’ three seniors: Laura Nethery, Michaela Huff, and Lara Newberry.
