Newberry Named October’s Player of the Month by Southern Conference

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Thanks to another stellar month of play, Lara Newberry was named October’s Player of the Month by the Southern Conference on Thursday.

During the past month, Newberry played in 10 matches and recorded 278 digs as the Lady Mocs went 7-3 during that span.

In October, the senior libero also enjoyed two more record-setting performances to add to her already impressive résumé. On Wednesday, Oct. 8 the Chattanooga native broke the NCAA’s all-time record for digs in a career.

The previous record of 2,791 was held by Minnesota’s Paula Gentile and was broken with her 15th dig of the match against Samford. Newberry’s record now stands at 3,041.

The other mark that fell at the hands of Newberry was the school record for digs in a match. Previously set at 46 by Kylie Hunter in 1991, Newberry had 51 digs in the Lady Mocs’ Oct. 11 match against Wofford.

The senior currently leads the nation in overall digs (642) and digs per set (6.48).

The Lady Mocs will return to action this Saturday against Appalachian State at 7 p.m.
