Lady Mocs Drop Match to UNC Greensboro, 3-0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team was swept by UNC Greensboro 3-0 (21-18, 23-25, 18-25) in Fleming Gym on Wednesday. With the loss, the Lady Mocs fall to 11-14 and 3-9 in the Southern Conference, while the Spartans improved to 15-11, 7-4.                                                             

Junior middle blocker Courtney Barnes (Franklin, Tenn.) recorded nine kills to lead the team and added four blocks. With seven blocks, sophomore middle blocker Ellie Kuhn (San Antonio, Texas) moved to fifth all-time in block assists with 89 passing Heather Strohl (1991) and Carmen Walker (1998). Chattanooga out blocked the Spartans with 11 blocks compared to five.

Freshman outside hitter Megan Ernd (Munster, Ind.) notched five kills along with Kuhn and Heather Parman (Ooltewah, Tenn.).

The squad used two setters as junior Bailee Chastain (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) had 15 assists and senior Cassie Conner (Willow Spring, Ill.) recorded 11.

Defensively, the Lady Mocs were paced by freshman libero Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) with a match-high 17 digs. Sophomore Laura Brock dug up nine attacks with Barnes and Chastain adding seven each.

For the match, Chattanooga only generated 29 kills and hit .114 with 16 errors, while UNC Greensboro connected on 46 kills hitting .197 and 20 errors.

The Lady Mocs and Spartans traded points in the first set all the way up to a 21-all tie, where Chattanooga rallied from down 18-20. UNC Greensboro took the next four rallies in succession for a 25-21 win.

In the second set, UNC Greensboro came out and grabbed a 8-3 lead, but Chattanooga came back to keep the score. The Lady Mocs came within one point of the Spartans towards the end of the frame at 23-22 and 24-23, but a kill by Emily Lindborg ended the threat, 25-23.

After the break, Chattanooga took a 4-1 advantage only to see UNC Greensboro wipe it a way on a 10-4 run. From then, the Lady Mocs were unable to solve the Spartans as their opponent controlled the set en route to a 25-18 win.

Chattanooga is back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they travel to Elon. Next weekend, the Lady Mocs host Western Carolina and Appalachian State with both matches beginning at 2 p.m. from Maclellan Gym.
