ELON, N.C. - The University of Tennessee took the first set against Elon causing 10 errors and only committing two, but the Phoenix went on to win the match 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 11-25, 10-25). Sophomore Laura Brock (Chattanooga, Tenn.) notched her seventh double-double of the season registering 13 kills and 11 digs.
After 11-straight matches ending in sweeps after a five-set loss on Sept. 26th with Elon (21-5, 8-4 SoCon), Chattanooga (11-15, 3-10 SoCon) ended the streak opening today's match with a 25-22 victory. In that stretch, the Lady Mocs were 3-8 with victories in straight sets against UNC Greensboro, Western Carolina and The Citadel.
On the outside, freshman Meagan Ernd (Munster, Ind.) totaled seven kills and six digs, while freshman Heather Parman added five kills and digs. Senior setter Cassie Conner (Willow Springs, Ind.) assisted on 18 kills and had two kills of her own.
With five blocks each, middle blockers Courtney Barnes (Franklin, Tenn.) and Ellie Kuhn (San Antonio, Texas) made their presence felt against the Phoenix. Kuhn notched four block assists and now has 93 on the season, which is one block assist shy of Leslie Ball (2006) for fourth in a season. With only two more total blocks, the San Antonio, Texas, native will show up on the total blocks chart as Leslee Ball is 10th with 108.
Five different Lady Mocs posted at least five digs during the match as Brock and freshman libero Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) led the team with 13 each.
The first set saw the Lady Mocs take advantage of 10 mistakes made by the Phoenix as Chattanooga only made two. The teams traded points for most of the first set that was kept close due to a 6-0 run by the Lady Mocs helping to tie up the match at 18-all. Chattanooga used two kills by Ernd and an Elon attack error taking a 21-18 lead. Barnes finished the set with a kill providing the Lady Mocs with a 25-22 win.
As the Phoenix seemed poised to jump all over the Lady Mocs in the second set with a 6-1 lead, Chattanooga responded with four-straight points of their own. The score stayed close until Elon went on an 8-1 run and eventually pushed its lead to 23-17 and the Phoenix closed the set out, 25-20.
After regrouping during the intermission, the Lady Mocs battled the Phoenix to a nine-all tie during the third, but Elon rolled from there on a 16-2 run taking the set 25-11.
The fourth set could have seen Chattanooga lay down, but they continued to fight battling to within one point of the Phoenix 20-19 late in the frame. Unfortunately for the Lady Mocs, Elon ended the threat with a 5-1 run and a 25-20 victory.
The Phoenix had three players Caroline Lemke, Traci Stewart and Jessica Barrow hit double-digits in kills with 18, 25 and 12, respectively. Elon generated 64 kills, but Chattanooga caused 25 errors keeping them in the match, while the Lady Mocs only had 34 kills.
Chattanooga returns home to host Western Carolina and Appalachian State on Nov. 7-8. The first serve for the match with the Catamounts is set for 2 p.m. on Nov. 7. The Lady Mocs are back in action on Nov. 8 for Senior Day where Chattanooga will honor Cassie Conner prior to the match with the Mountaineers.
