Chattanooga Drops Four Set Match to Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team fell in its final game of the season to Davidson, 3-1 (23-25, 18-25, 25-22, 23-25). Each set proved to be a battle and the Lady Mocs rallied after dropping the first two sets won the third for the first time this season.

Sophomore outside hitter Laura Brock (Chattanooga, Tenn.) paced Chattanooga (12-17, 4-12 SoCon) with 12 kills, while Sarabeth Peele and Jorden Benedict led Davidson (9-23, 6-10 SoCon) with 16 kills each.

After recording nine kills each, junior Courtney Barnes (Franklin, Tenn.) and sophomore Ellie Kuhn (San Antonio, Texas) controlled the middle of the net also blocking down four and three attacks, respectively. Kuhn stretched her record block assist total to 102 this season and is eighth all-time in total blocks with 117.

Defensively, freshman libero Paula Passmore (Merrit Island, Fla.) tied a match-high with 20 digs, while freshman outside hitter Meagan Ernd (Munster, Ind.) added 10. The Lady Mocs registered 56 digs on the afternoon 12 more than the Wildcats.

In her last game of her career, senior setter Cassie Conner (Willow Springs, Ill.) assisted on 34 of Chattanooga's 45 kills and contributed to the team's defensive effort with eight digs.

Freshman Erica Cowart (Chattanooga, Tenn.) recorded her first service ace of the season.

With 41 ties and 17 lead changes, the match was tightly contested and each set could have gone either way.

In the first set, Chattanooga registered 12 kills, but committed eight mistakes including an attack error on Davidson's set point.

Davidson took control of the match in the second set hitting .300 along with 12 kills and only three errors notching a 25-18 win.

After the intermission, the Lady Mocs performed their best hitting at a .250 clip registering 12 kills and scoring on the last three rallies to close out the set after being tied 22-all.

The third set went back and forth like most of the match with Davidson seaming to take a decided advantage at 22-18 after scoring on four consecutive rallies. Chattanooga continued to rally and wound up getting within a point at 23-22 and 24-23, but the Southern Conference kills leader Sarahbeth Peele put an end to the threat lifthing the Wildcats to a 25-22 win.

Chattanooga ended its season Saturday afternoon and will look forward to next season with the entire team returning except its lone senior Cassie Conner. The SoCon tournament is Nov. 21-22 hosted by Furman where the top two seeds from each division will square off for the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
