CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.-The Chattanooga Mocs (8-11, 2-2 SoCon) volleyball team travels to Elon, N.C., and Greensboro, N.C., this weekend to take on the Phoenix (8-11, 1-3 SoCon) and Spartans (8-7, 3-1 SoCon) for the first time in the 2012 season.
The Mocs were 1-1 last weekend, suffering a 3-0 loss to Samford and claiming a 3-2 win over Wofford. Chattanooga is now just one win away from tying last season's conference win total, and faces two of the three teams downed by UTC in 2011 on this week's road trip.
Chattanooga's bus makes a stop at Elon on Friday as the Mocs take on the Phoenix at 6 p.m. for the first of two meeting. UTC and Elon split last season's matchups, Chattanooga taking the first 3-1 at home and falling 3-0 on the road in the second. The Mocs hold an 11-8 all-time record over the Phoenix.
Elon is coming off a 1-1 weekend with a 3-0 win over Western Carolina and a 1-3 loss to Appalachian State. Senior libero Ali Deatsch was named Defensive Player of the Week after totaling 52 digs over the two-match weekend. The Phoenix's Megan Gravely ranks ninth with 2.98 kills per set and Ana Nicksic is seventh with 8.98 assists per set in the SoCon.
Chattanooga travels to UNCG Saturday to square off against the Spartans at 6 p.m. at Fleming Gymnasium. Greensboro and the Mocs split last season's matchups, as well, as the Mocs claimed a 3-2 victory in the first match, but fell 3-0 in the second. Chattanooga commands a 24-7 all-time record against the Spartans.
UNCG was 1-1 last weekend with a 3-0 loss to Western Carolina and a 3-1 win over Appalachian State. UNCG's Lauren Betlach was named the SoCon Freshman of the Week for her performance against the Mountaineers and Catamounts. The freshman averaged 3.43 kills and 2.57 digs per set, while also posting a career-best 16 digs against WCU. The Spartans' Karrian Chambers stands seventh in the SoCon with 3.12 kills per set while the defense is led by Katherine Santiago, averaging 4.03 digs per set.
Chattanooga's Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Month for September Thursday afternoon. The Mocs' senior recorded 336 digs in the month, leads the SoCon with 432 digs and is ranked third in the NCAA with an average of 6.35 digs per set. The senior also moved up to second in the UTC record book last Saturday night with her 2064th career dig.
Mocs setter Bridget Camacho (Cumming, Ga.) ranks fifth in the SoCon with a 9.60 assists per set average. Her 653 assists is good for fourth in the conference, and senior Christina Teter (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) is tied for sixth in the SoCon with Georgia Southern's Kym Coley with .87 blocks per set. Teter totals 55 blocks with seven solo blocks.
