The Chattanooga Mocs (8-13, 2-4 SoCon) volleyball team wraps up its longest road-stint of the season this weekend in Charleston, S.C., with matchups against the College of Charleston and The Citadel.
UTC takes on the College of Charleston Cougars (13-6, 5-1 SoCon) Saturday at 5 p.m. and will end the weekend with a 3 p.m. Sunday meeting against The Citadel Bulldogs (4-18, 0-6 SoCon). This will be the first of two Saturday-Sunday road trips for the Mocs as opposed to beginning weekend competition on a Friday night.
The Cougars are coming off their only SoCon loss of the season, dropping a 3-1 match to Furman last Sunday. Before the loss to the Paladins, Charleston was riding a seven-match winning streak. CofC has claimed wins over Wofford, Davidson, Georgia Southern, The Citadel and Elon. Charleston hosts Samford tonight at 7 p.m.
As a team, the Cougars rank in the top five of each statistical category in the conference except one; service aces. CofC is second in the SoCon in blocks, averaging 2.00 blocks per set, and third in total blocks with 144 on the season. The defense continues for the Cougars as they are fourth in the league with an average of 16.96 digs per set, averaging just 0.17 more blocks than Chattanooga.
The Citadel entertains the worst record in the SoCon, yet to find a win in conference play. The Bulldogs picked up two victories Tuesday with wins over Charleston Southern and Savannah State. Their only two wins before Tuesday had come against Stetson and an out-of-conference matchup with Wofford. The Citadel's double-header sweep earlier in the week snapped an eight-match losing streak.
The Bulldogs are registering 1.81 blocks per set this season, good for sixth in the SoCon. The Bulldogs rank in the top 10 with 0.92 service aces per set and 11th with 1.70 blocks per set, but fall last in the conference in hitting percentage, opponent hitting percentage, assists and kills.
Meanwhile, the Mocs find themselves near the middle of the pack in every category. Chattanooga's highest ranking is fifth in the SoCon with an average of 16.79 digs per set, totaling a third best 1259 digs on the season. UTC's .194 opponent hitting percentage is the sixth best in the conference.
Individually, senior libero Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) is tops in the SoCon with 469 digs this season, averaging a conference-best 6.25 digs per set. Passmore ranks second in the NCAA, just 0.38 digs behind Penn State's Dani Shepherd.
Junior Bridget Camacho (Cumming, Ga.) is sixth in the SoCon with 9.55 assists per set, good for 130th in the NCAA. Freshman Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) is eighth in the league with a .304 hitting percentage, ranking 204th in the nation.
