"We came out flat," Chattanooga head coach J.D. Kyzer said. "We managed to tie it up early, but just couldn't keep up the momentum."
Charleston got on the board first with a goal by Nicole Koretsky in the 16th minute to put the Cougars up 1-0. That lead was quickly dissolved with an equalizer from senior Lauren Wilson (Columbia, Tenn.) on a corner kick from classmate Becca Smith (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) to make it 1-1 at the 16:53 mark. The goal was the first for Wilson.
The Cougars tallied goals by Maryam Buazza and Kate Twohig in the first half to make it 3-1 at intermission.
In the second half, Charleston went up 4-1 on a goal from Sarah Cardamone at the 68:36 mark. The Mocs responded with its closest shot on goal as Smith's shot hit off the crossbar. She picked up the rebound for a second shot but it sailed wide.
The Cougars added their fifth goal in the 85th minute on the first goal of the year by Victoria Fichman on a header just under the crossbar.
Smith led the Mocs with three shots while Wilson had two shots with one on goal. Freshman Hannah Wyatt's (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) lone shot was on goal for the Mocs sixth of the game. Freshman keeper Lauren Thomas (Germantown, Tenn.) recorded 11 saves on the night.
"I'm very pleased with Lauren and her abilities," Kyzer said. "She made some really good saves and has done a great job, but we can't expect her to make saves on the six yard line every time."
Chattanooga will remain in Charleston to take on The Citadel Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Live stats and streaming video will be available through the soccer schedule page at GoMocs.com, the official website of Chattanooga athletics.
