UTC returns to the road for three games beginning Thursday, Jan. 24, at Elon. The Mocs face UNCG on Sunday the 27th and are at Georgia Southern on Saturday, February 2.

OPENING TIPS
- Chattanooga is among five teams with one game of first place in the Southern Conference North Division. Samford leads at 4-1 followed by Western Carolina at 4-2. UTC, Appalachian State and Elon are all tied for third at 3-2. UNCG is another game back in sixth with a 2-3 record.

- UTC has won six of its last eight games. WCU has lost two in a row after winning the first three to start the new year.

- Head Coach John Shulman passed the legendary Ron Shumate (1973-79) for No. 2 in UTC coaching history with 140 career wins. His 140th came in one of the more memorable games in Chattanooga's rich tradition in the comeback win over App State Thursday. Mack McCarthy (1986-97) is first with 243.

- The Mocs are 57-21 all-time against Western, 34-2 at home. That record includes 46-18 in regular-season SoCon matchups. The teams are 5-5 splitting the last 10 meetings with each defending their home court. Check out page 3 for more series notes.

- Chattanooga has won its last five home meetings with the Catamounts and nine of the last 10.

- The Mocs lead the SoCon in rebounds per game (38.4) and offensive rebound percentage (.360) while ranking second in rebound margin (+4.4) and third in defensive rebound percentage (.717). Western Carolina leads in steals (8.1) just ahead of the Mocs in second (7.8).

- Chattanooga has out-boarded opponents by 10 or more seven times thus far with a high of 30 against Reinhardt. The plus-21 at Kennesaw State is the top margin against a DI opponent. The squad was +13 on the boards (30-17) at Samford last Saturday. The last time the Mocs had eight or more +10 nights on the glass was 11 in 2008-09. The season record is 17 set by Shulman's first team in 2004-05.

- Chattanooga is 10th in the league in FT percentage (66.2%). In the first 36 minutes, it struggles at 60.5 percent (184-304). In the final four minutes of the game is where the squad excels shooting 82.4 percent (84-102). Ronrico White leads the way at 91.9 percent (34-37) followed by Z. Mason at 91.7 percent (22-24).

- UTC scored 45 points in the first 33:24 Thursday night against App State. It posted 46 points in the final 11:36 including overtime. That included scoring on the final 13 possessions of regulation.

- Z. Mason (23) and Dontay Hampton (22) became the first Mocs duo to top 20 points apiece since Ricky Taylor (24) and Omar Wattad (22) at home against Elon last season (2/9/12).

- Freshman Gee McGhee has played 23 or more minutes in every game with a high of 37 (App State). He is the only student-athlete on the squad to do so averaging a team-best 28.9 minutes per contest. Mason is second at 26.6 minutes per game. McGhee is averaging 9.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists and a team-high 1.4 steals per contest. He posts 9.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists in SoCon contests.

- White leads the squad in FT percentage at 80.9 percent (72-89). He has made 22 of his last 24 attempts (91.7%).

SOCON HISTORY
- UTC is 355-205 in SoCon regular season games - 217-62 at home, 138-143 on the road.

- Chattanooga has been the dominant program since joining the SoCon in 1977-78 after winning the 1977 NCAA Division II title.

- UTC has won 28 championships in 35 seasons in the league including 10 regular-season (prior to division play starting in 1994-95), eight division and 10 tournament. Davidson is second during that span with 19, 11 of which are of the division variety. 

- The Mocs 20 regular-season/tourney titles are far and away the most through those 35 campaigns followed  by East Tennessee State (now in Atlantic Sun) with nine (3 reg season/6 tourney) and Davidson (1 reg season/7 tourney) with eight.

- Chattanooga has won a title of some kind in 19 of its 35 years in the SoCon.

SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS 
- Western is 7-11 overall, 4-2 in the SoCon North.

- Larry Hunter is 114-129 in his 8th year in Cullowhee, 623-353 in 33rd year as a head coach. He is 7-7 vs UTC, 1-6 in Chattanooga.

- Trey Sumler leads the Catamounts at 17.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.1 steals per contest. He is second in the league in scoring and steals.

- WCU is 4-2 at home, 2-8 on the road.

- Common opponents thus far: Catamounts lost 72-70 at Eastern Kentucky and 64-60 at Samford (Thursday) but beat App State (70-64) and at The Citadel (72-55).

MURRAY ARNOLD
The Chattanooga Mocs lost a legend on Nov. 14, 2012 as former Head Coach Murray Arnold passed away in Florida. He laid the DI championship foundation coaching for six years, 1980-85, with a 135-46 record. He coached collegiately at four institutions (Birmingham Southern, Western Kentucky and Stetson) amassing a 420-229 mark in 22 seasons. The Mocs captured four SoCon Championships in six UTC campaigns advancing to three NCAA Tournaments and two NITs reaching the Elite 8 (NIT) in 1985 and narrowly missing the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1982.
