GoMocs.com 3-part series: Point Guards | Wings (Today) | Posts (Monday)
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---Basketball season is right around the corner. The Chattanooga Mocs are hard at work preparing for the upcoming campaign.
GoMocs.com starts its three-part season preview series today highlighting the point guards. The wings (Friday, 11/1) and posts (Monday, 11/4) follow in the coming days. The game preview for Covenant launches on Wednesday, November 7, with a special “Chaos” page with video and infographics due on Opening Tip Eve, Thursday, November 8.
All this leads into the season opener on Friday, November 8 at 5:30 p.m. Chattanooga starts off with a doubleheader with the men facing nearby Covenant, while the Lady Mocs welcome Alabama into McKenzie Arena in the night cap.
Next up is the preview of the wings. It’s the Mocs most experienced position, albeit with second-year players. Click the video link for Wade’s insight into the twos and threes.
Jones is one of the top performers in preseason camp. According to Wade, he is a dominant presence in practice.
McGhee is coming off a SoCon All-Freshman campaign. He led the squad in steals (1.3/gm) and minutes (29.0/gm), while ranking second in scoring. White has been a contributor since stepping on campus in 2011. He will start the season on the bench mending from a hip injury.
Fellow sophomore Eric Robertson (3.3, 1.3) will battle both McGhee and Jones for playing time at the two and three. He’s also worked some at the one providing a lot of versatility. Freshman walk-on Jay Wimbley (Winter Park, Fla.) provides depth on the wing as well.
There are a few combo options as well. Bran and Doyle could see some time at the two, although both profile mainly for minutes at the one this season. White missed all of preseason practice with a hip ailment. The staff is hopeful of his return in time for league play.
WADE WINGING IT:
“When you talk about the wings, you got to start with Gee McGhee. He is a returning starter with 12 points-per-game as a freshman. We certainly expect him to do big things as a sophomore. Gee can score in a variety of ways. He’s been good defensively and been particularly pesky on the ball. We’ve worked with him on his free throw shooting because it’s a big part of his game. Coach (Wes) Long has spent a lot time in the gym working with him on his mechanics to help him shoot a higher percentage.
“Casey Jones is “CHAOS” personified. Casey gets after the ball. He’s all over the place. He leads us on the effort chart every day. Sometimes you feel like there are two of him on the court. We’ve worked on his shot and improved his range to three. He’s a great driver, he’s going to be tremendous on the offensive glass, so we are looking for a very good sophomore year from Casey.
“We’re going to use Eric Robertson as a combo guard at the one and two. He’s worked very, very hard on his ball-handling in the offseason. We’re going to have a package of plays every game for him. He’s definitely the best shooter of our wings.
“Jay Wimbley is a good shooter. We are looking for him to provide depth and give us a jolt off the bench. We feel confident about his shot and look forward to him knocking down shots in games.”
Next week is a big competition weekend for Chattanooga. Titled “Beat Week”, both basketball teams and the wrestling squad open their seasons on Friday. Football hosts a key Southern Conference matchup with Wofford the next day. Four major events will be completed within a 24-hour window.
The campus kicks off “Beat Week” on Tuesday, November 5, with a Pool Party Pep Rally. Starting at 5:30 p.m., there will be a wealth of activities with free food and giveaways at the fabulous Aquatic and Recreation Center across the street from McKenzie Arena.
