OPENING TIPS
- The Mocs are mathematically eligible to retain the final bye for the Southern Conference Championship. If the squad sweeps Western Carolina and Appalachian State, while the Catamounts and Mountaineers top Samford, then UTC wins the tiebreaker scenarios for the No. 4 seed in the tourney. - Saturday's game at App State is a DH with the Lady Mocs. The men tip at 2 with the ladies following at 4:30.

- The Mocs are 57-22 all-time against Western Carolina entering the 80th meeting between the two schools. UTC leads 57-22, 46-19 in regular-season SoCon game and is 18-18 all-time in Cullowhee. Check out page 3 for more series notes.

- Chattanooga leads the SoCon in rebounds per game (38.3) and offensive rebound percentage (.356), while ranking second in rebounding margin (+5.0) and defensive rebound percentage (.734). It leads in defensive rebound percentage (.755) in league games only stats.

- UTC is ninth in the league in FT percentage (67.1%). In the first 36 minutes, it shoots 62.6 percent (340-543). In the final four minutes of the game is when it excels shooting 80.0 percent (120-160). Z. Mason paces the effort at 90.3 percent (28-31) with Ronrico White right behind at 89.8 percent (44-49).

- The Mocs have made 35 less free throws (465) than their opponents have attempted (500).

- Gee McGhee has scored 12 or more in 11 consecutive contests. McGhee had back-to-back 20-point games with 22 against The Citadel and 20 vs. CofC and his career high of 24 vs. Elon during this stretch. He's averaging 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game over this span shooting 47.4 percent from the floor, 37.2 percent from three-point range and 68.5 percent from the line.

- McGhee's development has been impressive. Here is a look, per the numbers, by month:

- Starting with his 22-point performance at LSU, Mason has been on quite a roll. He is averaging 16.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game over the 21-game stretch shooting 49.4 percent from the field, 35.7 percent from the arc and 73.2 percent from the charity stripe.

- Last three games for Mason: 18.3 ppg and 6.7 rpg shooting 60.6 percent (20-33) from the field, 50.0 percent (3-6) and 75.0 percent (12-16) from the free throw line.

- Mason is posting 15.6 points and 7.3 boards per SoCon contest. McGhee has also elevated his play in the league slate averaging 14.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

- White's consecutive free throw streak ended at 26 in the home game with Elon. That ties UTC Hall of Famer William Gordon (1975-78) for fifth longest streak behind Chad Copeland (43), Willie White (30), Brandon Born (29) and Born again (27). Dates are available on page 110 of the media guide.

- White is the 28th Moc all-time to eclipse 100 FTM in a season. The last was Nicchaeus Doaks (2006-09) with 139 in 2008-09. He is the 12th guard. His 110 this season is tied for 18th with Lance Fulse (1985-88). McGhee became the 29th Saturday and is now tied for 20th with Chris Behrends (1988-89) with 107. Mason is 10 shy of the mark with 90.

- White has been among the league leaders in FT% all year. He has made 34 of his last 36 (94.4%).

- The Mocs have lost 81 man games to injuries this season.

SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS
- Western Carolina is 12-17 overall, 8-8 in the SoCon North. It is 6-5 at home, 3-4 vs. SoCon competition with wins over App State, UNCG and Wofford.

- Larry Hunter is 119-135 in his eighth year in Cullowhee. He has amassed a 628-359 in 33 seasons. He is one of 13 active DI coaches with 600 career wins ranking No. 10.  He is 8-7 vs UTC, 6-1 in Cullowhee.

- One of four schools (Chattanooga, Samford & App State) vying for final bye in SoCon Championship.

- Western Carolina is averaging 69.4 points per game while allowing 69.8. The Cats shoot 43.2 percent from the field, 34.2 percent from three-point range and 71.4 percent from the free throw line.

- WCU is tied with Wofford for the SoCon steals lead at 7.6 per game. Tom Tankelewicz leads the league in 3pt made per contest (2.7), while Trey Sumler paces it in minutes per game (37.7).

- Sumler is the Catamounts leading scorer at 18.1 per game. Tawaski King adds 11.0 points and 6.0 boards per contest.

MURRAY ARNOLD
The Chattanooga Mocs lost a legend on Nov. 14, 2012 as former Head Coach Murray Arnold passed away in Florida. He laid the DI championship foundation coaching for six years, 1980-85, with a 135-46 record. He coached collegiately at four institutions (Birmingham Southern, Western Kentucky and Stetson) amassing a 420-229 mark in 22 seasons. The Mocs captured four SoCon Championships in six UTC campaigns advancing to three NCAA Tournaments and two NITs reaching the Elite 8 (NIT) in 1985 and narrowly missing the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1982.
