DAVIDSON, N.C. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's basketball team dropped its seventh-straight game with an 88-61 loss at Davidson today. The Mocs fall to 9-16 overall and 3-9 in the Southern Conference. The Wildcats improve to 17-5 on the year and 11-1 in league play.
Davidson started the game on fire, hitting eight of its first 10 shots from the floor. A pair of foul shots by De'Mon Brooks at the 13:51 mark gave the Wildcats a 20-6 lead.
Mocs senior Omar Wattad (Johnson City, Tenn.) stopped the run with a deep three as he and junior Drazen Zlovaric (Novi Sad, Serbia) tired to get things going. Zlovaric scored Chattanooga's first six points and finished with 10 in the half.
The Wildcats shot 56.7% from the field and 7-19 from behind the arc to take a 47-30 lead at the break. Chattanooga was 11-29 from the field in the first 20 minutes, including 2-10 from 3-pt. range.
It was more of the same for Davidson after intermission. They hit six of their first 10, including 3 from behind the arc, to open the second half. A three-pointer from the corner by Nick Cochran gave the Wildcats a 63-39 lead with 13:34 on the clock.
Chattanooga never could put together a run to answer Davidson's hot shooting. Sophomore Drew Baker (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored inside to cut the lead to 72-54 with 7:52 on the clock. However, that is as close as UTC would get the rest of the way.
Davidson finished the game 17-40 (42.5%) from 3-pt. range, the most threes in a game by a SoCon team this season. Chattanooga was outrebounded (41-27) for the first time in nine games.
Chris Czerapowicz came off the bench to lead the Wildcats with 21 points. He shot 7-14 from the field and 6-13 from 3-pt. range. Cochran finish with 15 points, all on threes, while De'Mon Brooks had 13 and Jake Cohen 11.
The Mocs return home Feb. 9, for an ESPN3 matchup against Elon. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at McKenzie Arena. Tickets are available on GoMocs.com or by calling the UTC Ticket Office at (423) 266-MOCS (6627).
