Freshman Sam Taylor was 2-for-4 Wednesday afternoon with a double despite Chattanooga's 6-2 loss to Georgia Southern.
Lady Mocs Fall 6-2 to Eagles in SoCon Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Shelby Morrill and AJ Hamilton each hit a homer as Georgia Southern (29-27, 14-9) advanced past Chattanooga (26-27, 10-11), 6-2. Sarah Purvis threw a complete game, allowing eight hits and two runs while walking one and striking out three.

For the first time all day, the designated home team, Georgia Southern, allowed no runs in the top of the first. Then in the bottom half, after a two-out double by Kourtny Thomas, Shelby Morrill sent a ball deep over the right-field fence to put the Eagles up 2-0 in the first inning.

SoCon Pitcher of the Year Sarah Purvis worked around a two-out double in the top of the second. Then, in the bottom half, Kaitlyn Johnson drew a one-out walk and AJ Hamilton hit a shot over the centerfield wall to extend the Georgia Southern lead to 4-0. New Chattanooga pitcher Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.) then got a ground ball and a diving catch by Jenny Garcia (Miami, Fla.) in foul territory down the left-field line to end the Georgia Southern scoring.

In the bottom of the fourth, Georgia Southern got two consecutive two-out singles from McLendon and Lewis before Lexi Allen send a double to deep right center to put the Eagles ahead 6-0. Kourtny Thomas then singled through the left side, but a good throw by Garcia got Allen at the plate to end the inning.

Chattanooga led off the top of the fifth with singles by Kaiti Dutton (Tulsa, Okla.) and pinch-hitter Tyler Templet (Woodstock, Ga.). Sam Taylor (Chickamauga, Ga.) then followed with a single through the right side and an error by the Georgia Southern right fielder allowed Dutton to score from second for Chattanooga’s first run of the game. Templet then scored on a sacrifice fly by Anyssa Robles (Lawrenceville, Ga.) to cut the Georgia Southern lead to 6-2, which was the final score.

Georgia Southern improves to 29-27 (14-9 SoCon), while Chattanooga falls to 26-27 (10-11 SoCon). The Eagles will face Western Carolina tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. Chattanooga will face College of Charleston tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. in an elimination game.
