Summer Highlight Series: Z. Mason

GoMocs.com is providing a weekly summer series highlighting the Chattanooga Mocs basketball program. This consists of a brief feature below and the attached highlight video from the 2012-13 season. We’ll start with Z. Mason.

Mason was quite a leader. Off the court, he served as one of the team captains. He was a key factor in keeping a young team together.

On the court, there is no denying his impact. Mason was a strong post presence for the Mocs throughout the season. He tallied 14.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per contest, both team highs earning All-Southern Conference mention (3rd Team Media) in the process.

Along with points and rebounds, Mason his squad in field goals made (173), field goals attempted (354) and blocks (29). He shot 48.9 percent from the field, 31,6 percent from three-point range and 71.8 percent from the free throw line.

Here are just a few of Z.’s season highlights:
>Started all 32 games after an injury-riddled 2011-12 season.

>The Dr Pepper Classic MVP averaged 20.5 points and 11 boards per game in the event. His 26-point, 13-rebound effort in the win over Utah Valley earned the title for the Mocs.

>Named SoCon Player of the Week on Jan. 22 averaging 22 points and 8.5 rebounds per game shooting 53.8 percent (14-26) from the field, 50.0 percent (3-6) from 3pt range and 81.3 percent (13-16) from the line in a win over App State and loss to Western Carolina.

>Mason posted eight 20-pt efforts in 2012-13: 27 vs. CofC (career high), 26 vs. Utah Valley, 25 at WCU (career best on road), 24 at Wofford, 23 vs. App State, 22 at LSU & 21 vs. Western Carolina & UNCG.

>He was amazing in the clutch. In the final four minutes of games, he shot a team-best 90.6 percent from the free throw line making 29 of 32 in such moments. That included a perfect 4-4 in the final 30 seconds in the comeback 70-65 win at The Citadel.
